Wasserman was a very big reason for me to hit a lot of Ratdog shows and I was
pretty surprised to read here that he's not with the band anymore, so I checked
on ratdog.org and they do indeed have a new bassist. I'm not sure if I'd care
to catch as many Ratdog shows as I have in the past without him, although I'm
definitely going to have to head south to see what they're all about now,
probably to Asheville and a festival or two.

Well its Bobby's band so they either had a falling out or Rob quit.
Ratdog is pretty hot, they have been for the last couple of years and
its because there is a lot of talent in the band. I liked Rob too but
his moving on is no reason to not see the Weir band....

Oh yes I agree 100%, until fall Other Ones tour a Ratdog show was my favorite
thing to hit.

Its just that I'm a big Wasserman fan and always loved the bass solo portion,
especially with DJ Logic. I've also heard a really good recording from a
friend that was kind of like those bass/Logic portions.

He and Bobby go back at least 15 years right? So in any event I hope they
didn't have a major falling out.

Ha, I forget its 2003 already.

Its more like 20 years, I think they began playing together in the early 80's,
I want to say 83 but I could be very wrong.

Geez, with all this war stuff I missed this development.

I think it's too bad, Wasserman had a fairly unique style and it was
kind of neat having another semi-center of gravity / could stand on his
own / musician in the band.

Who's the new guy?

Robin Sylvester is his name, I don't know anything else about him other than
according to ratdog.org he joined on 3/4/2003.

I never understood why wasserman stayed as long as he did.
he was a rising star...played/toured w/ lou reed.....solo records.
I guess the steady work and the paycheck were enough
to keep him around. And they played a lot of great music.

I seem to remember seeing a Bobby interview where he said something about
Ratdog sort of limited Rob. They will still play some Weir/Wasserman shows.
Rob just finished a short tour with the Willie Waldman Project and will be
doing more shows in the spring with that group. Rob is to be doing shows
with other musicians as well. hopefully we will see something soon from the
Woody Guthrie tribute that Rob and others have been working on for some
time.

Rob and Bobby did not have a falling out, in fact they are playing
together soon as a duo on the 28th at the REX benefit.

Anyways, Rob is moving on to other stuff, he is a "very popular guy
and just doing some new stuff" according to one of the higher ups in
the organization, i asked about this specifically and there was
absolutely no falling out. Which is very good news, they will probably
play together off and on as the contracts and time schedules permit.

Robin Sylvester played with Vince Welnick in his "Missing Man
Formation" and is according to all articles etc... that I have read,
an extremelly accomplished musician who will add a lot to RatDog not
detract. They are touring now, check them out! If you do a search on
google for robin sylvester, you can get a lot of info.

The "benefit in marin" is most likely the Rex Foundation Benefit, which is NEXT
Friday, March 28th.

Tickets are still available.

ROB is an amazing bassist! His work with indian musician Sultan Ustad Khan
w/mickey h. as a producer is very very amazing. Made me have a whole new
respect for that music. The vibrations of that upright bass would move you so
much. Ratdog was really something with him. Those solos would shake the floor
and your chest and send energy all through the room! and I agree the Wass and
DJ logic days were really nice!
guess i'll follow Lou Read now since Rob and Logic are with his band. Maybe
that is the possible reason for his departure.

Am I the only one who thinks his live playing is a bit stiff?
His studio stuff is awesome but I never liked him live.
YMMV,

I tell ya, he always blew me away in concert. I went to see Ratdog mainly

heaven.

I'll have to admit I haven't seen ratdog in about 5 years so he may have
improved his bass solo's but from what I remember it was satisfaction over and
over again.

You know, I've actually heard that identical criticism before. Five years
ago was early 1998, and I must confess, I only saw them twice before 1999.
But in the last 4 years, Rob's bass solos encompassed far more than
"Satisfaction". In fact, I don't actually remember hearing a Satisfaction
jam during in any solos I saw. My recollections are of Rob being stunningly
creative and innovative. But that's what makes the Dead family's music so
special. What I love in their music leaves others cold, and what bores me
is undoubtedly a transcendent experience for someone else.

Peace,
Neil X.

I think Wasserman is a very talented musician who has a tendency
towards musical masterbation at times. I found his solos to be
typically self-indulgent and not very interesting. On the other hand,
his work with Lou Reed was outstanding, the Trios album was mostly
very good, and when playing within the right context live he can be
very good. I was thoroughly blown away by the "Trios" concert he did
at the Beacon Theater back in 1993 (?, maybe '94), one of these days
I'll have to transfer my DAT to CD.

I'm not a very big Ratdog fan, but the last time I saw them (opening
for Phil on the 2001 summer tour) Rob seemed bored to me. I think he
was tired of the gig and has chosen to move on, which is fine.

Musical masturbation was better in the 70's.

Scoured the net for some info on Wasserman and DJ Logic currently playing with
Lou Reed..found nothing. You sure you got that info right? Can anyone point me
in the right direction?

Lou Reed played a song on one of the late-night network shows a couple of
weeks ago.His bass player wasn't Wasserman, and there was no "DJ."
