I have been directed here by my brothers at RMB (rec.music.bluenote)
to pose a question. Woe-Hah RMF!

On "Mothership Connection", the track "Unfunky UFO" lists one J.
McLaughlin with co-writer credits for this song. Is this jazz
guitarist John McLaughlin of Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" and
Mahavishnu Orchestra fame, or is it some "Clone of Dr. Jazzenstein"?

Please post any responses on RMB as well. Thanks in advance, long
live the funk!

Hmmm. Can't say I've ever heard of John McLaughlin ever playing with
P-Funk. Interesting theory though. However, I must correct you and say
that the songwriters of "Unfunky UFO" are George Clinton, Bootsy Collins
and Garry Shider, no "J. McLaughlin" is credited on that song. The song
"Handcuffs" is credited to George Clinton, Glen Goins and J. McLaughlin.

Since the credits read "J. McLaughlin" it may be Jerome McLaughlin who
was a guitar player from Chicago. I know very little about Jerome,
but I stumbled upon his name while doing research about the Bar-Kays.
(Jerome was looking for work at Stax in the early 70's and ended up
collaborating with the Bar-Kays on a song called "Memphis At Sunrise").

as a big JMcL fan i was also wondering when it first came out but if i
remember right i think i learned that it was Jerome, i'm 99% sure anyway
that it was not John. On that same tip though i've often thought
John MCLaughlin should reform Mahavishnu Orchestra as a funk extravaganza.
For instance, John jammed with Jimi and Buddy Miles and has toured with
Stanley Clarke so he's down with the funk. how about a double orchestral
formation:

John McLaughlin - guitar Carlos Santana - guitar
Stanley Clarke - bass Bootsy Collins - bass
Dennis Chambers - drums Buddy Miles - drums
Jan Garbarek - sax Maceo Parker - sax

if things got realy wild you could toss in Shankar on double electric
violin, Zakir Hussain, Trilok Gurtu and Mickey Hart on added percussion,
Fred Wesley on trombone, Brian Jackson on flute, John Popper on harmonica,
oh yeah, you have to have Bernie on keyboards. Pee Wee too. anyone else?

i was thinking about this "funk supergroup" concept, here's mine:
drums: ziggy modeliste
guitar: jimmy nolen
bass: larry graham
keyboards: bernie worrell
and talkbox vocals by roger troutman, plus the year would have to be 1972.
another good one is to have james brown do an album with the original
members of funkadelic, in 1971 or 72.

How 'bout Clinton, James Brown and Sly on vocals? And let's keep
Carlos Santana out of this. . . .
