Besides being a folk fan, I collect anything that has to do with
Winnie-the-Pooh and author A.A. Milne. I'm told that the Chad Mitchell
Trio recorded one of Milne's poems called James James Morrison Morrison.
Does anyone know the name of the album it is on? I'd like to start
hunting for it in used record stores.

Also, if anyone out there knows of any references to Pooh or Milne in any
other folk songs (besides say, the Kenny Loggins Pooh Corner songs, which
I have) let me know.

Thanks!

You may wish to investigate "The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil" on
Jefferson Airplane's (They really were folk-rock) "After Bathing at
Baxter's" album. Then investigate the story behind the song which refers
to Winnie the Pooh and Fred Neil.

I've got one I'm SURE you don't have! Leslie Fish, the filk writer, set
the Milne poem "Sir Brian" to music. The only extant recording I know of
(commercial, not private) is on an old Off Centaur Publications tape
called _OVFF Concert 1_; it is an anthology of songs recorded at the Ohio
Valley Filk Fest (the first one, in 9/84).

I am a dealer in such tapes, and I have a VERY few copies of that title
(fewer than 5). E-mail me for details.

(This tape has been out of print for several years; Off Centaur Publications
died as a company in 1988.)

Have you forgotten the Muppet Show and the Muppet Albums 1 and 2
Jim Henson's creations sing
Half Way Down the Stairs and
Coddlesom Pie.

Not familiar with Kenny Loggins Pooh Corner so these may be duplicates.

Excuse my ignorance but is the title "James James Morrison Morris" from
Pooh? I know the quotation from a Chad Mitchell Trio album (at the Hungry
I, maybe) which goes something like:

James James Morrison Morris
Wetherbe George Debree
Took great care of his mother
Though he was only three...

Same song??

Unknowledgeable in the classics!!!!

JAMES JAMES MORRISON
Sorry to be so ignorant, but taking the hint of John Lupton
(jlu...@sas.upenn.edu) I found the answer to my own question.

Getting less ignorant.
LTS

Here are the words:

JAMES JAMES MORRISON MORRISON

James James Morrison Morrison Weatherby George DuPree
Took great care of his mother though he was only three
James James said to his mother:
"Mother," he said, said he
"You must never go down to the end of the town,
if you don't go down with me.
Don't ever go down to the end of the town,
if you don't go down with me."

James James Morrison's mother put on her golden gown
James James Morrison's mother, she drove to the end of the town
James James Morrison's mother
She said to herself, said she
"Well, I can get down to the end of the town
And be back in time for tea.
Well, I can get down to the end of the town
And be back in time for tea."
King John put up a notice: "Lost, stolen or strayed,
James James Morrison's mother,
She seems to have been mislaid
Wandering vaguely all about quite of her own accord
She tried to get down to the end of the town--
Forty shillings reward.
She tried to get down to the end of the town--
Forty shillings reward.

James James Morrison Morrison, commonly known as "Jim"
Said to his other relations not to go blaming him
For James James said to his mother
"Mother", he said, said he
"Don't ever go down to the end of the town,
If you don't go down with me.
You must never go down to the end of the town,
If you don't go down with me."

Now James James Morrison's mother,
She hasn't been heard of since,
King John sent down to give his regrets,
And so did the queen and the prince,
King John, somebody told me,
Said to a man he knew,
"If people go down to the end of the town,
Well what can anyone do?
If people go down to the end of the town,
Well what can anyone do?"

You're not so ignorant, LT. After reading your question I went to look up
the poem myself and found out the title is Disobedience. I always thought
it was James James Morrison Morrison.

The poem doesn't really have anything to do with Pooh, but it is in AA
Milne's poetry book When We Were Very Young, which is often sold as part
of a set along with Now We Are Six (poetry), Winnie-the-Pooh, and the
House at Pooh Corner. Like the Pooh story books, the poetry books are
about childhood. Since they are illustrated by the same artist as the
Pooh books (Ernest H. Shepard) there are little Poohs throughout the
poetry books.

I don't know the name of the poem, but it may be in the
"Now we are six" collection:

Little boy kneels at the foot of the bed
Droops in in little hands, little golden head
Shush, whisper. who dares
Christopher Robin is saying his prayers...

As performed by Melanie on her first album, titled I believe
"My First Album". I love this song!

And I just remembered!

Where's Alice?
They're changing the guard at Buckingham Palace.
Christopher Robin went down with Alice...

Used to hear it on Captain Kangaroo, and I believe it's in
Rise Up Singing too.

My question doesn't have anything to do with folk music, but then I was
very surprised to read about these Pooh songs here...

As a child I had a wonderful recording of these songs performed by Sterling
Holloway, which was my only exposure to them. My record is long since
lost, and I have not been able to find the recording on CD. Does anyone
know whether it is available in some form somewhere?

The Chad Mitchell recorded James James... on At the Bitter End, which
is, IMHO, one of their best albums. And if you like Pooh, you really
should hear my husband reading the stories to our kids. His rendition
of Tigger and Roo up the pine trees is nothing short of wonderful! (I
realize the chances of your being in the audience are small...)

In my student days, we used to sit around the fire and put A.A. Milne to music.
JJMM was one of them. Didn't know anyone had actually recorded it! Was the
tune original? (I think we used Rocky Mountain Way, or at least the first
bit and the guitar riff...)

I remember our family had a recording (either a 45 or small 33 1/3)
When We Were Very Young (pun intended). I'm talking 35 years ago. I can
still sing "Cottleson Pie", the chorus was "Rum-tum-tiddle-um-tum" from "Pooh
Goes Visiting and Gets Into a Tight Place". The flip side had "Sing Ho! For
the life of a bear". I don't have the record any more and have no idea who
sang the songs or what label they were on. I just know that I enjoyed them
very much.

I still remember my parents reading the Pooh stories to the
family. My oldest brother and I were in the select group that would sit still
for Milne's wonderful poems.

I have also sung an arrangement of "Christopher Robin Is Saying His Prayers"
written for SSA by H. Fraser-Simson copywritten 1924 by E.P. Dutton &
Company.

The song, "James James Morrison Morrison," is on the album The Chad
Mitchell Trio at the Bitter End, recorded in 1962. Good luck in tracking
it down.
