GARDEN SONG
(Dave Mallet)
Inch by inch, row by row,
Gonna make this garden grow,
All it takes is a rake and a hoe,
And a piece of fertile ground.
Inch by inch, row by row,
Someone bless these seeds I sow,
Someone warm them from below,
'Till the rain comes tumblin' down.
Pullin' weeds and pickin' stones,
Man is made of dreams and bones,
Feel the need to grow my own,
'Cause the time is close at hand.
Grain for grain, sun and rain,
Find my way in Nature's chain,
Tune my body and my brain
To the music from the land.
Plant your rows straight and long,
Temper them with prayer and song,
Mother Earth will make you strong
If you give her loving care.
An old crow watching hungrily
From his perch in yonder tree,
In my garden I'm as free
As that feathered thief up there.

"The Anti-Garden Song"
Slug by slug, weed by weed
My garden's got me really teed
All the insects love to feed
Upon my tomato plants
Sunburned face, scratched-up knees
My kitchen's choked with zucchinis
I'm shopping at the A&P
Next time I get a chance
The crabgrass grows, the ragweed thrives
The broccoli has long since died
The only things still left alive
Are some radishes and beans
My carrot plants are dead and gone
Hear the rabbits sing a happy song
Until you've weeded all day long
You don't know what boredom means
We get up early, work 'til late
Watch moles and mice get overweight
They eat their dinners on a plate
From the hard work you have done
As ye sow, so shall ye reap
But I smell like a compost heap
I'm gonna gat that lousy creep
Who said gardening was fun

Garden Song by Dave Mallet
(transcribed from the album "Precious Friend" by Arlo Guthrie & Pete
Seegar)
Inch by inch, row by row |
Going to make this garden grow |
Going to mulch it deep and low |
Going to make it fertile ground. |
Inch by inch, row by row |---refrain
Please bless these seeds I sow |
Please keep the safe below |
'til the rain comes tumbling down. |
Thinning weed, picking stones
We are made of dreams and bones
Need a place to call my own
'Cause the time is close at hand
Grain for grain, sun and rain
Find my way in nature's chain
Tune my body and my brain
to the music of the land. (refrain)
Plant your rows straight and long
Seasoned with a prayer and song
Mother Earth wil make you strong
If you give her loving care
Old crow watching from a tree
He's got his hungry eye on me
In my garden I'm as free
as that feathered thief up there. (refrain)

This version also appears in the film documentary, "Folk City", which
I've seen on PBS as well as on videocasette.

"Inch by Inch" is on the 1993 CD, "Peter, Paul & Mommy, Too." The
arrangement is very similar to that of songwriter Dave Mallett on his
"Inches and Miles" collection. Noel Paul Stookey of PP&M took part in the
production of Mallett's CD, so there's a connection there.
