A while back there was a song the chorus of which was "Inch by inch and row by
row, gonna make my garden grow". Does anyone know what the title was and if it
is available on cd or casset and where?

There are many good covers of this song. I like the original best, by
Dave Mallet. Digital Tradition lyrics are attached.

GARDEN SONG
(Dave Mallet)

Inch by inch, row by row,
Gonna make this garden grow,
All it takes is a rake and a hoe,
And a piece of fertile ground.

Inch by inch, row by row,
Someone bless these seeds I sow,
Someone warm them from below,
'Till the rain comes tumblin' down.

Pullin' weeds and pickin' stones,
Man is made of dreams and bones,
Feel the need to grow my own,
'Cause the time is close at hand.

Grain for grain, sun and rain,
Find my way in Nature's chain,
Tune my body and my brain
To the music from the land.

Plant your rows straight and long,
Temper them with prayer and song,
Mother Earth will make you strong
If you give her loving care.

An old crow watching hungrily
From his perch in yonder tree,
In my garden I'm as free
As that feathered thief up there.

Some Arlo Guthrie fan could probably point you to the exact recording.

Hi Carolyn, "The Garden Song" by David Mallett, Cherry Lane Music, ASCAP,
is found in the folk song book collection "Rise Up Singing". I'm sure many
have recorded it, but the only one I'm sure of is the group I'm in.
:-)
We're the Loons (of Duluth, MN) and our cassette "on the fence" includes
the song. I learned it from Minnesota Public Radio. If you need more info,
pls e-mail. Bye, - Les Hazelton

You may or may not be into this kind of thing, but I saw Arlo do a
hilarious parody of this song. The new words turn out to have been
written by Eric Kilburn.

"The Anti-Garden Song"

Slug by slug, weed by weed
My garden's got me really teed
All the insects love to feed
Upon my tomato plants
Sunburned face, scratched-up knees
My kitchen's choked with zucchinis
I'm shopping at the A&P
Next time I get a chance

The crabgrass grows, the ragweed thrives
The broccoli has long since died
The only things still left alive
Are some radishes and beans
My carrot plants are dead and gone
Hear the rabbits sing a happy song
Until you've weeded all day long
You don't know what boredom means

We get up early, work 'til late
Watch moles and mice get overweight
They eat their dinners on a plate
From the hard work you have done
As ye sow, so shall ye reap
But I smell like a compost heap
I'm gonna gat that lousy creep
Who said gardening was fun

Words by Eric Kilburn, sung to "The Garden Song" by Dave Mallet.

Arlo seems to have made the song famous. I recall seeing him at a concert
when he told a story about crossing the Canadian border for some concerts.
He was quite funny as he mused about singing "The Garden Song" in a
country where the use the metric system. "Inch by Inch"? Millimeter
by.......?

It's called "Garden Song" and was written by Dave Mallett.
It's onhis first LP called DAVID MALLETT (Neworld) and his compilation CD
called INCHES & MILES (Flying Fish).

It's also been done by a lot of other people including Pete Seeger,
Arlo Guthrie, Noel Paul Stookey, John Denver, Kermit the Frog, etc.

"Inch By Inch," by Dave Mallet, 1978. Recorded by Arlo Guthrie and by
Peter, Paul and Mary. You'll also find it on Mallet's "Inches and Miles"
collection. It was #FF70110 on Flying Fish. I imagine it's still available,
even though Rounder bought out Flying Fish. This CD is a pretty good
introduction to Mallet's songs, although it doesn't have his wonderful
"Summer of my Dreams."

I'll go one more - Pete seeger recorded it, too. Anyway, hwere's the words
and chords although the chords may be out of place because of format
change.

Thank you all very much. Including the parody. Who would have ever dreamed
when we were listening to Richard Dyer-Bennet that we would be exchanging
lyrics over something like the internet.

There's also a very charming version sung by Sandra Beech, Canadian
children's performer. I believe that she also recorded it with the folks
from "Mariposa-In-The-Schools" Beverlie Robertson

Garden Song by Dave Mallet
(transcribed from the album "Precious Friend" by Arlo Guthrie & Pete
Seegar)

Inch by inch, row by row |

Going to make this garden grow |
Going to mulch it deep and low |
Going to make it fertile ground. |
Inch by inch, row by row |---refrain
Please bless these seeds I sow |
Please keep the safe below |
'til the rain comes tumbling down. |

Thinning weed, picking stones
We are made of dreams and bones
Need a place to call my own

'Cause the time is close at hand

Grain for grain, sun and rain

Find my way in nature's chain

Tune my body and my brain

to the music of the land. (refrain)

Plant your rows straight and long

Seasoned with a prayer and song
Mother Earth wil make you strong

If you give her loving care

Old crow watching from a tree
He's got his hungry eye on me

In my garden I'm as free

as that feathered thief up there. (refrain)

Garden Song was written by David Mallett. It is included on his CD (Flying
Fish) "Inches and Miles", a compilation of his 1977-1980 songs.

See his website at http://www.bicoastal.com/dmallett

Or, order from Mallett Music, Box 94, Sebec, ME 04481. Price is $15,
according to the recent mailing.( I have no connection to Mallett Music,
just a longtime fan)

"Inch by Inch" is on the 1993 CD, "Peter, Paul & Mommy, Too." The
arrangement is very similar to that of songwriter Dave Mallett on his
"Inches and Miles" collection. Noel Paul Stookey of PP&M took part in the
production of Mallett's CD, so there's a connection there.
