Appleseed Recordings, the independent Philadelphia-based folk and world music
CD label, is honored to announce that two of its 2003 releases by folk giants
Pete Seeger and Tom Paxton have been nominated for Grammy Awards in separate
categories by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences on December
4.

"Seeds: The Songs of Pete Seeger, Vol. 3," the multi-artist 2-CD set that
concludes Appleseed's trilogy of releases celebrating the music and life of
84-year-old folk music icon and humanitarian activist Pete Seeger, is among
five finalists in the Grammy category for "Best Traditional Folk Album." The
opening disc of "Seeds" represents Seeger's first full-length new release since
1996's "Pete," which won a Grammy in the same category, and features Billy
Bragg, Ani DiFranco and Steve Earle, among others, performing with Pete. The
second disc contains songs Seeger has recorded, adapted or performed in new
versions by Janis Ian, Natalie Merchant, Tom Paxton, and more than a dozen
other well-known singers and musicians.

The nomination of Tom Paxton's "Looking for the Moon" CD in the "Best
Contemporary Folk Album" category is Paxton's first Grammy nod in a
distinguished career spanning more than forty years and forty albums.

These are Appleseed's fourth and fifth Grammy nominations in its seven years of
existence, a strong showing for an independent young label.

"I'm very proud that the musicianship and artistry of Pete Seeger and Tom
Paxton has been recognized by the Academy, and we are honored to work with
these musicians," said Appleseed president Jim Musselman, who has produced the
trilogy of Seeger tributes that have involved more than 450 musicians.

"I'm not only glad to see that Pete's album has been recognized, I'm even more
gratified that songs from our three Seeger tributes have been used for hope and
healing around the world," added Musselman. Tracks from the previous Seeger
tributes, 1998's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone: The Songs of Pete Seeger,
Vol. 1" and 2001's "If I Had a Song: The Songs of Pete Seeger, Vol. 2," have
been utilized as anthems for peace and comfort in situations ranging from the
peace negotiations between Northern Ireland and England to the recovery from
the horrors of the Columbine massacre and the terrorist attacks of September
11, 2001. The song "Bring Them Home (If You Love Your Uncle Sam)" from "Seeds"
is currently a call for peace in the public reaction against President Bush's
invasion of Iraq.

Congratulations to Jim Musselman and Appleseed for these Grammy nominations.
Not since Moe Achs' Folkways label has there been a record label so
dedicated to bringing this vital kind of music, and the wonderful artists
who perform it, to all of us.

Best wishes,
