I woke up this morning to a light summer's rain. The song "It's raining,
it's pouring, the old man is snoring." popped into my head. But this was
all I could remember of the lyrics. Can anyone help me out with the rest
of it? Are there actually verses to it? Thanks for any advice ar help.
Think I'll take my dog for a walk in the rain.....

I learned this as:
It's raining, it's pouring,
The old man's snoring,
He went to bed and bumped his head
And never got up in the morning.
I remember my mother telling me off for singing it on a bus, when I was
about eight. To me "old man" == "old man", not "father" or "husband" as
was probably intended; and it never occurred to me that he might be dead,
rather than asleep...
She also told me off for calling my brother a "little runt" very loudly
in the street. I explained to her what a runt was, but she didn't seem to
understand! I was a very confused eight year old!

It's raining, It's pouring,
The old man is snoring.
Bumped his head on the head of the bed
And couldn't get up in the morning.
By the way, it's a relief to know that I'm not the only one who gets

Peter Paul & Mary sing 'It's Raining' on their very first album (called,
guess what: 'Peter Paul & Mary'), with these words sung to the children's
skipping rhyme tune -- among other things.

There is a lovely song by Jose Feliciano on his live double lp (early
seventies) which I think is simply called RAIN (it goes >> listen to the
falling rain, listen to it fall ...<<). If I remember right, this live
version includes the bit you quoted, presumably as some sort of funny
interlude.

* Alternate:..and didn't get up in the morning
I remember this as a skipping song.
My grandmother sings:
Rain, rain go away
Don't come back 'til washing day
i have been following this thread since the beginning. this version
is close to the one i learned *a long time ago* except the third
lines would be:
Went to bed and bumped his head
but this is what folk culture is, isn't it?

Peter, Paul & Mary also re-recored it on their Peter, Paul & Mommy Too!
Album/video a year or so ago.

The way I remember it is "It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is
snoring. He went to bed and bumped his head and couldn't get up in the
morning." Never heard it set to music, or any more verses than this.
Hope this helps.

The version I recall is slightly different:
"It's raining it's pouring, the old man is snoring.
He bumped his head behind the bed
and couldn't get up in the morning."
It was set to a little sing-song tune.
I may have had it on a 45 rpm child's record in the 50's.
