In the late '60s, Rory Gallagher was in a group called TASTE. Their stuff
was not necessarily released over here [U.S.], back then, but was surely
imported for the cogniscenti. However, as far as I can tell, they haven't
shown up on CD. Considering some of the stuff that has, this is a little
surprising. I suspect they're out there, on some truly obscure indy blues
label.
If anyone knows anything about this, please contact me.

all four Taste albums (2 studio, two live) are on CD, in UK, Germany, Japan
and who knows where else.
i havn't seen the (pre-Taste) In The Beginning album (rec 67) on CD however.
i think the studio LPs were issued in the US, but don't quote me.
Polydor was the label, and any CDs I've seen (I don't own any) were also on
Polydor
now if only Rory was folk, somebody here might actually appreciate this
quasi-information:-)
(FYI - quite Hendrix like - though often mistakenly compared to Cream - mostly
bluesy)

I saw Best of Taste in the store.

When I saw him 10 yrs ago, he did an electric set, a solo acoustic set
and then an electric set.
He does do old folk songs like Leadbelly's Out on the Western Plain
and the old east coast style folk blues like Pistol Slapping Blues.

I'd say closer to Santana, w/o the latin beat.
He's way under-rated, but then supposedly he's a drunk.
so now we have 5 Taste albums out on CD!

true.... and he does loads of Chicago blues.

hhmm - can't see the connection i must say - and Rory's ten times the guitarist
Carlos Sanata ever was.

the second allegation is most unfair in a public forum. like most musicians
who've been on the road since the late 60s, he's had his brushes with the demon
alcohol. unlike most - he has never lost his touch, released an embarrassing
album, abused his audience or taken them for granted.
all the indications are that he is very much in control these days, and has been
for many years. the rumours were always private - his drinking *never* affected
his performances that I ever heard. Has anyone heard to the contrary?
what does "but then" mean? people don't rate him cause they all *think* he's
a drunk? that usually adds credibility in this sick world!
(see Shane McGowan)
now if he had done mega drugs like Hendrix or Clapton or Page, then he'd be a
*real* guitar hero right?
he's underrated because he has never compromised, befriended Phil Collins,
tried to have a hit, been outrageous, gone public with strange theories,
grown a beard, or dressed up to suit anyone. a total individualist who
has taken the business strictly his own terms from the earliest days.
oblivious to fad or fashion.
obvious parallel (note i dind't say comparrison!) which held until 5 or 6
years ago: Bonnie Raitt.
she was fine till she grew that beard... that was the end of her street cred:-)

Hi Edie:
I remember seeing Taste in concert in Glasgow, Scotland in the
early '70s. This was around the time of their first album, which was
simply called TASTE. They didn't become known as Rory Gallagher & Taste
until their second album. They put out a lot of sound for a guitar,
bass, and drums trio. Rory Gallagher looked like he'd just come from a
hard day's work on the farm, wearing filthy looking tight demin jeans,
and a pair of old pointy Beatle boots, and making his Strat howl like a
banshee, while he danced all over the stage. This took place in a dance
hall (the Locarno I belive). There was a small audience of about 200
people all sitting on the floor (most of whom were high, or in the
process of getting high). This was one of the best, and most memorable
concerts I have ever attended.
While visiting my relatives in Scotland four years ago, I tried
to find their first album on CD, but had no luck. There was a "Best of
Rory Gallagher & Taste" CD, but I passed it up. Coincidentally, I
received a "Collectors Choice Music Catalog" in the mail about two weeks
ago. On page 29, there is a CD called THE BEST OF TASTE FEATURING RORY
GALLAGHER. It contains 16 tracks from the band's four albums. The
catalog number for this CD is AHPOL19992, and the price is $17.95.
Company address is Collectors' Choice Music
