This is a bit late for this thread, but another notable cello appearance is Max Dyer of
the Houston Symphony Orchestra on Selia Qynn's 'All Children Here'

One of the best around is Hank Roberts, from Ithaca, NY. Great jazz,
improv, folk cellist. Have heard, seen him many times and it's always an
awe inspiring event.

Wasn't it Harvey Brooks that played cello on Jim & Jean's "Changes"

been about 25 years since I heard it, so I might be wrong...

John Hagan (Austin/Nashville) was the cellist with an old Texas Irish
Band called Eagle Bone Whistle. He has also done work with Nanci Griffith
and Lyle Lovett. He is just fine.

When Shinobu Sato recorded my song, "Rusty Old Red River" on his album
"Little Signs of Autumn" he had cello accompaniment by Junko Fujiwara.
His enterpretation of the music is beautiful. But I am prejudiced.

Have you heard of "My Friend the Chocolate Cake" from Australia. They're not
folk, not rock, sort of halfway between and they feature Helen Mountford on
Cello and vocals. They've released two CDs that I'm aware of.

Hagen is indeed wonderful!

Also check out the late Arthur Russell (who died in 1992 of AIDS but left
us a wonderful "oeuvre" of songs with his own cello accompaniment). His
album "Another Thought" is out on Philip Glass's Point label and has cameo
appearances by Jennifer Warnes. It's not exactly "folk" but it's the
closest thing to Nick Drake I have *ever* heard!

There is a great video of early folk and old-time musicians called
"Times Ain't What They Used to Be". In it is a cowboy group doing a
very silly stage show and performing some songs. A cello is featured
in several songs - it looks authentic and not part of the joke.

While you are at it, check out the two giant banjos on the same tape.

also saw him at the Iron Horse, opening for Trout Fishing in A. a couple

putting out his stuff. He's an amzing, risk-taking artist.

Chopper, the bassist for Oysterband, makes significant

with 3 Mustaphas 3, but I am unsure whether he used a cello
with them.

Nope, it was Bob Sylvester. Brooks was on bass.

Meanwhile, cellists. Paul Goelz plays excellent cello on several
recordings by Phil Cooper & Margaret Nelson, including "Lady's Triumph"
and "Pretty Susan".

Katie Harlow plays cello in the Albuquerque, NM band "Half Gypsy" (no CD
out yet, but we're all hoping); she plays in several bands there,
ranging from world folk to English country dances to old-time. Even
played as a session musician for a Led Zep concert not long ago.

Abby Newton, of course, plays on a lot of recordings from the northeast,
including several Jean Redpath records.

Clare Lowther played on Fairport Convention's "The Book Song", on "What
We Did on our Holidays".

Barry Phillips plays cello on such recordings as "Simple Gifts", "The
World Turned Upside Down", and others on the Gourd label.

Peace.

The Cauld Blast Orchestra and has sessioned on several albums, done
work with fiddler Alastair Fraser and some lovely music with cello and
pipes and played on Billy Jackson 'Wellpark Suite'.

Another group that is worth following up for the excellent use of cello
by Helen Mountfort (along with violin, mandolin, piano, guitar, snare
drum & other percussion, etc.) in a folk / acoustic setting is a band
with the great name of, wait for it:

'My Friend the Chocolate Cake'

They do a lot of 'quirky' music, similar in some respects to Penguin Cafe
Orchestra, and are based in Melbourne (Australia). They have two CDs out
(one self-titled and the other is called 'Brood' - both are excellent) on
'White' records I think - don't ask me who distributes them outside OZ.
The band is in part based around members of 'Not Drowning, Waving' who
are also excellent, but different again.

Check them out if you get the chance.

Harry Chapin was the first pop/folk band that I remember that featured a
cello. It is orchestrated in most all of his music and featured
prominently.

He went through several cello players over the years, one that comes to
mind is Yvonne Cable, but there were several others.

In 1971, there was a folky duet (husband and wife) called "Sweet

distaff side played cello to her hubby's guitar.
