Racism and prejudice in Australia are becomming rather hot issues, and
I'm looking for ideas as to what songs there are on the topic that are
either acoustic/folk or can be arranged for an acoustic/folk group.
Peace.

Hello!
I think that the Peter, Paul & Mary song, "I'm In Love With A Big Blue
Frog", which I heard on their album entitled "Album 1700", might be one you
may want to check out.
Good luck!

Similar is Fred Small's "If I Were A Moose (And You Were A Cow)"
Mary the Filker
Broonzy. At the time it was such a hot potato that he couldn't get it
recorded in the States; had to go to France.
It's a great song, but maybe one to treat delicately; it's focused and
personal enough that, as a white guy, I'd feel way out of line to sing
it myself.

This hasn't stopped Rory Mcleod.

Why not try some Australian songs, viz,
Title: Of Trees and Humankind
Artist: The Fagans
Album: Kitchen Dance
Distribution: Mossbawn Music, P.O. Box 154, Epping, NSW 2121
Sample lyric: They simply did not understand/They laughed at the old ways
with scorn and derision/They raped, and they plundered and
all was justified by the word/"Civilized"
Two other recordings of this song are
Title: Of Trees and Humankind
Artist: Margaret Walters
Album: For the Future and the Past
Distribution: Feathers and Wedge, P.O. Box 615, Glebe, NSW 2037
Note: Margaret's currently on concert tour in the UK
and
Title: Of Trees and Humankind
Artist: Margaret Walters
Album: Ryder Round Folk Five Years On
Distribution: 2MBS, 76 Chandos St., St. Leonards, NSW 2065
This last one is on vinyl. 2MBS is a radio station & it's possible albeit
unlikely that they have a few copies left.
Title: The Man With the Pink Triangle
Artist: Peter Hicks
Album: The Bottom Line
Distribution: glaz...@trump.net.au or
http://www.trump.net.au/~glazfolk/index.htm
About a woman who helps gay people now because a gay man helped her survive
a Nazi concentration camp when she was a child.
Title: Ethnic Cleansing
Artist: Cocky's Joy
Album: The Joy
Distribution: Try Sandstock or FoFMbM
Title: When the Wee Birds Start Leaving
Title: Among Proddy Dogs and Papes
Artist: Alistair Hulett & Dave Swarbrick
Album: The Cold Grey Light of Dawn
Distribution: Musicfolk Limited, P.O. Box 339 W. Byfleet, Surrey,
KT14 7YP, phone 01932 348594, fax 01932 355152
OK, so Hulett & Swarbrick aren't Australian, they both lived here for
a while & that's good enough for me. The first song is about the plight
of the Gypsies in the UK, the second is about Protestant/Catholic
prejudices in Scotland.
There's also Eric Bogle's song, I Hate Wogs; I don't know what album it's
on. And very appropriate is Judy Small's You Don't Speak for Me, but, again,
I don't know what album.
The Kev Carmody album, Pillars of Society, should come in handy.
Sandstock Music may distribute many of these albums, as may Friends of
Folk Music by Mail at fof...@zip.com.au or www.zip.com.au/~fofmbm/.
Disclaimer: I have no financial interest here but I do count several
of these people among my friends.

You're telling me they are. Has anyone heard an anti-Hanson folk song
yet? Maybe we should write one.
Arian Hokin
Sorry for the late response, I've been offline for a while.
The single most powerful song I have ever heard about racism is "You've got to
be Carefully Taught" from South Pacific. Other great songs are "What Color is
God's Skin?" sung by Up With People in the late 70's,"National Brotherhood
Week" by Tom Lehrer, and "Inside" by Peter, Paul, and Mary.
