Does anyone know the history of the song 'Midnight Special' ?
I have heard John Fogerty, Merle Travis and some old blues singer do the tune.
Merle said that it's ' an old folk song done a million times, and here's mine'
I was wondering, who wrote it, when and all known performers of the song.
Is it a blues based song or what ?
It must be an old folk song, 'cuz everyone does it a little different and
sings the lyrics in a different order and with a few different words.
Just wondering; any info would be appreciated.

Lots of folk will answer this, but Midnight Special was written (in the
1940s?) by the late, great Leadbelly (aka Hudie Ledbetter). And it's as
blues-based as a song can be, IMHO. Zillions of people have recorded it.
