Seeing as a discussion has started up on folk music radio in
the New York area, I'm wondering if anyone could post similar
information for San Francisco/Bay Area. I've been living here for
about a year now, and haven't run across anything yet.
Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Harold

"Here is the latest version of my radio list; as always,
corrections and additions are welcome. I only keep tabs on
the stations I can receive, so I have dropped such stations
as KKUP (Cupertino) and KUSP (Santa Cruz) from the list.
"All bets are off during marathons at KPFA.
"TV listings, esp. KCSM, change frequently."

{I'm really wonderful at not practicing}
the KUSF Irish show is now 1pm-2pm on Sundays.
The Friday Bluegrass/country show on KPFA is now 1pm-2:30pm (so KPFA has
a block of roots music every weekday at the same time - on Monday they have
a blues show).
The early morning KPFA shows have been changed substantially - check the
folio for latest info.

Regarding this excellent list, Mountain Stage hasn't been
on KALW for a long time. Instead, they have Thistle and Shamrock
from 3 to 4 and Kevin Vance from 4 to 5, which were also listed.
If you're driving south of San Jose on a Sunday night and
like bluegrass and/or Hawaiian music, Cousin Al has a show
on KPIG. I haven't got the frequency with me.

Harold, there isn't much, but here's what I know of (mostly
Bluegrass-centric):
KKUP 91.5
---------
A very small station in Cupertino. It's funded entirely by contributions
(not NPR, etc.), and plays a very wide variety of music and talk.
Bluegrass Monday and Thursday evenings, and Saturday afternoon. Folk music
Tuesday mid-day and Friday afternoon.
KCSM 91.1
---------
Jazz all week, but Sunday 12-5pm is Bay Area Bluegrass Sunday, the premier
bluegrass radio show in the area.
KPFA 94.1
---------
Berkeley's progressive Pacifica station has a folk-roots block Mon-Fri,
1-2:30pm. Tuesday's America Back 40 show is great.
KSAN 94.9
---------
The big commercial country station lets down its hair on Sunday night,
7-midnight, with All Kinds of Country, which plays a great mix of
bluegrass, folk, rockabilly, etc.
The Peninsula center for acoustic music is Gryphon Stringed Instruments in
Palo Alto. They offer group and individual guitar, banjo, etc. lessons,
and sell instruments, music, CDs.
Also, last summer was the first California Coast Music Camp, a weeklong
camp for acoustic music. It was a great success, and will happen again
next July. Let me know if you want to know more about it or Gryphon.
