Black Eyes

We seek a Russian Gypsy tune of which I've heard jazz settings. German
title is Schwarze Augen. English is something like Black Eyes.

Can anyone help?

I'm thinking maybe you mean Dark Eyes. There's a bunch of different
English translations. If I remember it right, I learned it like this.

Dear Dark Eyes of thine,
Once thought you were mine,
Please come back sometime,
Just for Auld Lang Syne
To your balcony,
And look down on me,
Bring back memories,
Dear Dark Eyes

I'm not positive, but I think what you're looking for is "Chichornya"
(spelling not guaranteed, either) which means "Dark Eyes". The only place I
can positively remember hearing it is in one of the old Merrie
Melodies/Looney Tunes cartoons, probably a Bugs Bunny epic. I'm sure
somebody like Theo Bikel has recorded it at some point. It's not on his
EKL-150 or EKL-185, but I couldn't tell you where else to look. It might be
in one of those international/world music songbooks or I suspect it might be
found in a more classical/art song context. In any case, happy hunting!
