Hi group. I just subscribed to this group because I am looking for a song I
heard on "Folks Like Us" last weekend. I have had no luck finding it on the
web so I turned here for some help.

The name of the song is "My Brother John is a CPA" and I believe it is by
Dave Gordon. Could anyone provide me some insight about the song or singer.
I want to get a hold of the CD but can't seem to find it so far.

Thanks!!!!!!!

Dave Gordon was a singer/songwriter from Dayton, OH who died in 1986 at
an early age due to a lengthy illness. He left a legacy of his
wonderful music on the now-defunct Vetco label from Cincinnati. I read
recently that the Vetco catalog had been acquired by a Crosscut Records
in Hazard, KY; they list a web address which is not currently active, so
you will need to find their phone number. I for one would certainly like
to see his work available on CD's.

Dave's songs covered a wide range from the humorous to the serious.
He was an excellent performer with a keen wit, and he interacted freely
with his audience; there was a sense that we were one big family. One
night at a Steve Goodman concert at Canal Street Tavern (where Dave
also frequently played), Steve presented Dave a Cub's baseball cap.

The song "My Brother John Is A CPA" is on the "Cordury Road" album,
Vetco LP708, 1982 (vinyl and probably cassette, but out of print).
I really wish he was still writing and playing in Dayton; he is
truly missed.

Thank you very much for that explanation. I was listening to Folk Like Us
last Saturday and was instantly hooked on the song. You see, I am a CPA, my
wife is, her father is, her uncle and cousin are, and I work with about 30
of them.

I would love to be able to find that song and even the album if the rest of
the songs are just as clever. I am making it my mission (after tax season is
over that is) to find that song!!!

Thanks again, I appreciate it.

Mike-

You have good taste. Dave was brilliant. I was lucky enough to see him
perform once, back in NJ. To my mind he was very similar to Steve Goodman,
but unique, of course.

Here is a list of his albums. All LP except the last one which was released
posthumously on cassette.

Dave Gordon. Natural Causes.
Dave Gordon and Watershed. Falling Rock.
Dave and Kay Gordon. Corduroy Road.
Dave and Kay Gordon. Live at Last.
Dave and Kay Gordon. Room to Grow. (a children's album)
Dave Gordon. Black and White Rainbows.

B&WR is a folk opera. Dave sang all the songs and played all the
instruments.

All of these things are out of print, dammit. Some of his songs have been
recorded by others, especially Charlie King. Dave produced some of CK's
albums, and for a while Charlie had a DG song on each album.

I hope Dave's widow Kay is able to get the rights and money to put out a
best of on CD, (and a songbook!) but in the mean time, I don't know what to
tell you except to haunt old vinyl stores.

Cheers,
Rob Lopresti

Mike, If, after 14 years, you are still interested in "My Brother John is a CPA", contact me. Dave Gordon was a dear friend of mine, and I have duplicate copies of many of his albums, though no longer a working turntable. I would part with one to someone who appreciates Dave's brilliance. Bob

It is a same the rights nonsense that has smudged his wonderful work. I was a production assistant at WFAL, the campus radio station at Bowling Green State University near Toledo around 1980, and came across his music. Back then...no internet, so obscure fans like me had hardly any way to tell others about how great some things were, and his music in particular. I have several of the albums, scratched and pitted by love, from back in those days. A wonderful talent that you make you laugh, weep, and everything in between. I am a big fan of folk music, and his stuff in particular...only person that comes close is Christine Lavin, here in the future.

Visit www.everybodyandme.com and have a listen to my work...breaking into voice acting.

Hi Everyone,

I am hoping to get lots of the music transcribed for a songbook this year (finally someone has offered to do it). I don't have funds to pursue much else, and those who have record album copies do keep them close to the vest (though I get requests for them, I only have a few and they are out of print).

If anyone could help me put the music on mp3's that would be immensely helpful. I just don't know how! So please connect with me if you can train me.

Thanks much and I am glad you are enjoying the music!

Kay (Gina Kay Landis, now, but my email is above).
