SUGAR HILL'S GUY CLARK GETS THIRD GRAMMY NOMINATION
NC Label Ups Tally To 28 GRAMMY Noms In Nearly 20 Years!

DURHAM, NC, January 6--The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences
(NARAS) announced today that the Sugar Hill release "Keepers," by legendary
songwriter Guy Clark, is a GRAMMY Award nominee for Best Contemporary Folk
Recording.

"Keepers," recorded in concert at Nashville's Douglas Corner in October 1995,
is Clark's ninth career album and his first featuring re-recordings of some of
his best know songs--hence the title. "In retrospect, I realized I was never
really happy with the way they were recorded before," Clark says. "I just
wanted to do them over." In addition to the fresh sound of such Clark classics
as "Desperados Waitin' for a Train," "LA Freeway," "Heartbroke," "Texas
Cookin'," "Homegrown Tomatoes," and "The Last Gunfighter Ballad," "Keepers"
also features two new Clark songs. "I like rock'n'roll and all different kinds
of sounds," Clark confesses, "but I just wanted to explore this real, pure
acoustic approach. 'Keepers' really pleases me."

"Keepers" also pleases critics: "Clark's smoky voice has matured like brandy,
which doubles the intensity of his own ironic fatalism" (Dave Marsh, Playboy),
"this album renews the luster of such Clark gems as 'Desperados Waitin' for a
Train,' 'Better Days,' 'LA Freeway,' and 'Texas--1947'"(Dave Zimmerman,
USAToday), "A tender, tough charmer" (Alanna Nash, Entertainment Weekly),
"Though the artist may be too modest to admit it, 'Keepers' is so good, it
could easily beget a sequel" (Paul Nelson, People).

This GRAMMY nomination is Clark's third and his second in the Best Contemporary
Folk category. His 1988 Sugar Hill release "Old Friends" received the
nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Recording and The Highwaymen's version of
Clark's song "Desperados Waitin' for a Train" earned the Country Song of the
Year nomination.

With Clark's current nomination, Sugar Hill has now received 28 GRAMMY
nominations and won eight GRAMMIES in its not quite 20 year history. Last year
Sugar Hill won the GRAMMY for Best Bluegrass Recording for "True Life Blues:
the Songs of Bill Monroe." This loving tribute to the universally recognized
"Father of Bluegrass Music," the late Bill Monroe, was produced by Todd
Phillips and features an all-star cast of 30 of today's best contemporary
bluegrass artists.

Sugar Hill has dominated the Best Bluegrass Recording GRAMMY for most of the
'90s, winning in 1997, 1996, 1995, 1994, 1992, and 1991 (1997--"True Life
Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe" by various artists and produced by Todd
Phillips, 1996--"Unleashed" by the Nashville Bluegrass Band, 1995--"The Great
Dobro Sessions" by various artists and produced by Jerry Douglas and Tut
Taylor, 1994--"Waitin' for the Hard Times to Go" by The Nashville Bluegrass
Band, 1992--"Spring Training" by Carl Jackson, John Starling and the Nash
Ramblers, and 1991--"On Praying Ground" by Doc Watson).

In addition to Guy Clark, Sugar Hill's roster includes such other well-regarded
artists as Doc Watson, James McMurtry, Chris Hillman, Herb Pedersen, Jerry
Douglas, Sam Bush, Terry Allen, Bad Livers and dozens more. Its catalog of 300
titles includes such diverse artists as Sweethearts of the Rodeo, Tom Paxton,
Don Dixon, Robert Earl Keen, Townes Van Zandt, the Seldom Scene and many more.
Sugar Hill is credited with helping launch the careers of Ricky Skaggs and
Marty Stuart. Known and admired throughout the industry for its artistic
integrity, Sugar Hill Records marks its 20th anniversary this year as an
independent record label specializing in American roots music--including
Americana, bluegrass, country, folk, singer/songwriter, and roots rock.

The 40th Annual GRAMMY Awards take place Wednesday, February 25, in New York
City.
