Anyone know whatever became of L.A.-based singer/songwriter Genny
(Genevieve) Haley, author of the once classic "Rolling Hills of New
Joisey"? The chorus, to be sung in your finest NEW-ick accent, goes:
Oh, when I die, bury me low,
So I can hear the petroleum flow,
The sweetest sound I ever did know,
In the rolling hills of New Joisey.
The last address I had for Genny was in Culver City, and that was
a long, long time ago.
Regards,
Steve

I have the authors of that song as "Matt McGinn, Roberts & Barrand" on John
Roberts & Tony Barrand's tape "Live at Holstein's"
And on this tape it goes "Da rollin' *mills* of New Joisey."

Greetings:
I stand corrected. Genny was the first one I heard that song
from, maybe several years before I heard Roberts and Barrand do it, so
I always (and obviously wrongly assumed) they got the song from her,
not vice versa. And you are right that it's "mills" and not "hills."
That having been said, I'd still like to know whatever became of
Genny Haley. Any ideas?
Regards again,
Steve
As far as I know, she's not online. I just spoke with her a couple of days ago
(we used to be in a band called Any Old Time together).

Speaking of McGinn, anyone know his dates of birth & death? The man was
a genius, a great entertainer a great humanist & satirist (maybe those
last two are the same thing). Little recognized out side Scotland, I
think. I was stunned the few times I caught him live.

McGinn wrote Rolling Hills of the Border. Roberts & Barrand wrote the
parody, Rolling Mills of New Jersey.

Greetings:
Learn something new everyday!
Just to set the record straight: Genny Haley wrote "I Am an Old
Cow Puncher," recorded by Roberts & Barrand. I had either first heard
the two songs at the same time or in close proximity, and I got the
credits confused. Sorry for the boo-boo.
Anyway, thanks to "Cleoma" I now possess the information I had
sought.
And Matt McGinn, for what it's worth, wrote one of my all-time
favorite parodies, "Christine." Set to the tune of "Mrs. McGrath," it
tells the adventures and misadventures of Christine Keeler. If you
don't recognize the name, just imagine adding a foreign espionage
agent and some British accents to the Bill & Monica saga, and you'll
begin to understand. :-)
Regards,
Steve
Abby, I recall Matt McGinn died in either 1981 or 1982. I used to have
the copy of Melody Maker which had Colin Irwin's obituary for Matt. I
believe that he apparently suffered either a stroke or heart attack and
fell across an electric heater, which finally killed him -- a terrible
way to die. I seem to remember it was about the same time Nic Jones
suffered his horrible car accident.

May both songs live long and prosper!
