I read the news group FAQ, so I know better than to ask "what is folk
music"... buttt... I do have this quandary.
I do booking and promotion for a singer/songwriter. (Debra Guy) The
music she plays is all acoustic 12-string guitar and vocals. Her songs
are pretty rambunctious, and she's been known to break strings often.
I try to book her into coffeehouses, and folky venues and some of them
tell me:
"she's not folk ..she's pop/rock"... oohkay
So I try to book her into rock/pop venues and I hear "Its only a solo
artist playing acoustic guitar?? Well... she must be folk".
I won't even get into the fact that since she's a "girl" she must not
be rock.
Damnit. She's not exactly folk. She's not exactly rock. She's Folk n'
Roll. or Acoustic Rock? or ... I dunno. If Ani DiFranco can be folk, so
can Debra.
Anyone else have this trouble?
Just wondering....frustration is killing me...

Over on uk.music.folk they were talking about the glut of CDs going to
folk radio stations, and we learned that the standard (unflattering,
sorry) acronym for what your friend plays is "Acoustic Rock Singer
Songwriter". Or ARSS. Me, I'm an ARSS too, though perhaps more Folky
than Rocky (uh!). But it conveys the general field pretty well. You
can also drop the "Rock" if you find it conveys the wrong message, but
then, the acronym get's a little more pointed...
Mainly, it's the "singer/songwriter" that helps people understand the Ani
DiFranco mold.
Hmm, maybe I'm a Folk/Acoustic-Rock Singer/Songwriter - a FARSS.
