Hi there,

The other day on CBC Radio I heard a great song to the tune of Barrett's
Privateers by Stan Rogers. The chorus went

God damm them all, I was told
this beer was worth it's weight in gold,
we'd feel no pain, shed no tears!
Now it's a foolish man who shows no fear
at a glass of Garnet's homemade beer!

Anyone know who sings this and what the rest of the words are??
(It WASN'T Garnet singing)

It was Ian Robb and Grit Laskin and co. from Toronto; can't
remember the name of the album... I think Come For To Sing, Chicago (?)
folksong mag, published the lyrics a long time ago...

Very funny parody... hope someone else can give you the whole
thing (within the bounds of copyright law etc. etc.)

In *An Unfinished Conversation* the biography of Stan Rogers, on
pages 98 and 99, you can find all of the words to Garnet's
Homemade Beer. If you are a fan of Stan Rogers, Garnet or
Canadian folk music in general, this book is required reading.
Lots of anecdotes about Stan, Garnet, and others who traveled
with them. Lyrics to most, if not all, of Stan's songs are included,
including some that are still unreleased. Rumour has it that there
will be another CD of previously unreleased Stan Rogers material
out some time.

The book can be got from:
Penguin Books Canada Limited
10 Alcorn Avenue
Toronto, Ontario
M4V 3B2

Or check your local folk music shoppe.

I think it was written by _Friends of Fiddlers' Green_. They performed
it at Summerfolk (Owen Sound, Ontario) this year. I recall one verse:

So here I lay with me twenty-first beer
(How I wish I'd never tried it now!)
Old Garnet's drunk on a bottle of dregs,
His breath set fire to both me legs.
[chorus]

I've heard that Garnet recited the chorus at a concert (probably near
Edmonton) in early September.

...from The Digital Tradition, October 1993 version:

GARNETT'S HOMEMADE BEER
(Ian Robb)

1. Oh the year was nineteen seventy-eight,
(How I wish I'd never tried it now,)
When a score of men were turned quite green
By the scummiest ale you've ever seen

Chorus:
God damn them all,
I was told this beer was worth its weight in gold
We'd feel no pain, shed no tears,
But it's a foolish man who shows no fear
At a glass of Garnett's homemade beer.

2. Now Garnett Rogers cried the town
(how I wish I'd never tried it now,)
For 20 brave men all masochists who
Would taste for him his homemade brew.
3. This motley crew were a sickening sight
(how I wish I'd never tried it now,)
There was caveman Dave with his eyes in bags
He'd a hard-boiled liver and the staggers and jags.

4. We hadn't been there but an hour or two
(how I wish I'd never tried it now,)
When a voice said "Give me some homemade brew"
As steeleyed Stan hove into view.

5. Now steeleyed Stand was a frightening man
(how I wish I'd never tried it now,)
He was eight foot tall and four foot wide
Said "pass that jug or I'll tan your hide.

6. Stan took one sip and pitched on his side
(how I wish I'd never tried it now,)
Garnett was smashed with a cupful of dregs
And his breath set fire to both me legs.

7. Now here I am with my 23rd beer
(how I wish I'd never tried it now,)
It's six long years since I felt this way
On the night before my wedding day.

It's Ian Robb, on his excellent new album _From Different Angels_
Avail from Fallen Angle Music, 285 Spencer Street, Ottawa, ON K1Y 2R1
The song is called "Garnet's Homemade Beer" and it was sung to Stan,
with great amusement all around, by Friends of the Fiddler's Green,
a group Ian is/was part of. Ian wrote the lyrics.

Cheers, Gene

It's Ian Robb's song. It was apparently written back about
'78 after a party featuring Garnet's homemade beer, which apparently
has a reputation. It's done acapella, to the tune of Barrett's
Privateers, and is on an LP called "From Different Angels."

Garnet's Home-Made Beer

Oh, the year was 1978
(How I wish I'd never tried it now!)

When a score of men were turned quite green
By the scummiest ale you've ever seen

CHORUS:S
God damn them all! I was told
This beer was worth its weight in gold
We'd feel no pain, shed no tears
But it's a foolish man who shows no fear
At a glass of Garnet's home-made beer

Oh, Garnet Rogers cried the town
(How I wish I'd never tried it now!)
For twenty brave men, all masochists who
Would taste for him his home-made brew

CHORUS

This motley crew was a sickening sight
(How I wish I'd never tried it now!)

There was caveman Dave with his eyes in bags

He's a hard-boiled liver in the staggers and jags

CHORUS

Well we hadn't been there but an hour or two
(How I wish I'd never tried it now!)
When a voice said: "GIMME SOME HOME-MADE BREW"
And Steeleye Stan hove into view

CHORUS

Now Steeleye Stan was a frightening man
(How I wish I'd never tried it now!)
He was eight feet tall and four feet wide
Said, "Pass that jug or I'll tan your hide!"

CHORUS

Stan took one sip and pitched on his side

(How I wish I'd never tried it now!)
Garnet was smashed with a gut full of dregs

And his breath set fire to both me legs

CHORUS

So here I lay in me twenty-third beer
(How I wish I'd never tried it now!)
It's been ten years since I felt this way --

On the night before my wedding day

CHORUS

It must have been the author, Ian Robb, from his new album,
_From Different Angels_. The words are in the Digital Tradition.
