Kevin Welch wrote & recorded one about the original Rt 66 travelers. It's
called _Mother Road_ and appears on his self-titled 1st CD (1991-ish). An
outstanding rock-n-roll album, btw.

At the risk of stating the obvious there is a fine old popular tune
called Rout 66. It was written by Peggy Lee's Husband, who's name
momentarily escapes me (no, not Mr. Lee). It was recorded by many
people. The old Nat King Cole record is good. The Harry James record is
good. My favorite is (of all people) Perry Como's marvelously swinging
rendition on RCA.
If any Joe tells you to go
Some other way say, "Nix!"
Get your kicks
On Rout 66.
James Stewart
"Railroading on the Great Divide"
"Arizona" (I think that's the name. From Cosy Sheridan's first album,
_Late Bloomer_, the song where the chorus starts "It's the air in
Arizona")
"???" Erica Wheeler's song about rafting on the Colorado River through
the Grand Canyon, from her CD _From That Far_
"???" Bernice Lewis's song about the Grand Canyon, I think from her
CD _Open Lines and Signals_
I don't know whether Route 66 goes through Utah, but there is Christine
Lavin's "If You Want Space, Go To Utah"
Arlo Guthrie has a song called "Oklahoma Hills" (I don't know if it
was actually one of Woody's)
Ed and Carol Florida, from Arkansas, have a song whose chorus starts,
"There's a wind blows through west Texas like west Texas wasn't there,
and straight through Oklahoma, but them Texans they don't care..."
I think it's on Doug Clegg's new CD as well as on Ed and Carol's tape.
Mike Seeger recorded a song with the line "He's a mean ole dog and
he comes from Tennessee" in it (one of his Rounder CDs from the
early 90s)
Dave Crossland and Cindy Kallet have unrecorded songs that fit
the bill. Crossland's "Peeing In The Desert With Jack", and
Kallet's "I Want A Tree".
Chris Smither has recorded "Memphis In The Meantime" and several
other songs mentioning Memphis. Andrew Calhoun's "Recall" contains
the line about Memphis that I don't recall.
There's folksong (Civil War era?) where each verse ends "...in the
state of Arkansas", but that's all that's coming to me right now.
