I recently saw the best show by a folk musician I've ever seen. I saw
Garnet Rogers perform in a medium size club here in Halifax. Garnet by the
way, is the brother of the late Stan Rogers.
I got there a little bit late because my room-mate was trying to put off
what he thought would be an evening of "fish music", but after seeing the show
he admitted that he thoroughly enjoyed himself. Anyway, for most of the night
Garnet played acoustic guitar - to a degree of beauty that must be experienced.
He is such a beautiful guitar, playing intricate finger-picked pieces, with
tasty chord progressions. He's quite an adept guitarist - a treat to listen to.
His voice is so smooth, and deep, and flawless throughout the show. I was
impressed with his vocal competence and emotional quality of his singing. He
sounds very much like his brother - not quite as dynamic, but a littlw smoother,
perhaps more soothing. He did perform a couple of Stan's songs, " Lies " from
Northwest Passage, and for an encore he did the acapella song " Northwest
Passage" as an instrumental - on fiddle. I've only one of his albums so he
played a lot of songs I'm not familiar with, but they were so well performed
that I very much enjoyed them.
Another quality of his show which leaves a lasting impression is his humor
and story-telling in between songs. He has quite a wry sense of humor and holds
your interest throughout his many stories of family and performance. In this
regard you'll also be entertained in a refreshing manner.

If Garnet's ever in your area, go see him. Even if you've never heard of
him before. If you like good acoustic guitar based folk music, and you
appreciate a fine voice, and you enjoy a humorous story or two - you'll be glad
you went. Incidentally, he's quite friendly as well - I talked to him for a bit
after the show, and he was very appreciative of our compliments.

Any comments?

Til Next Time...

I can heartily second that. Garnet does a great show -- I was lucky
enough to see him with Archie Fisher several years ago. He's different
than Stan, but not less talented.

When he did a show in Toronto a year or so ago, Garnet also did the fiddle
instrumental of Northwest Passage as his encore ... but the audience all
sang the words as he played. A very moving moment, and one I won't forget.

I have all of Garnet Roger's albums myself, and find your
analysis of him to be quite correct. He has been through
my area twice in the past two years, and both times I have
not been able to go and see him perform.

His latest (or so I believe) "Small Victories" has one of
the prettiest songs on it that I have heard in a very long
time; that being the song "Stars in their crown".

Does anybody else listen to Garnet Rogers? I have the
following Garnet Rogers albums, are there more?

- Garnet Rogers
- The Outside Track
- Speaking Softly in the Dark
- Small Victories

Finally, I also have a compact disc of Doug McArthur's (he
and Garnet are good friends) that Garnet appears on. It
is titled: "Doug McArthur with Garnet Rogers".

There is also _Off the Map_ which is a Garnet Rogers and Archie Fisher
collaboration. If you're looking for Garnet's voice, though, you won't
find it -- Archie Fisher does the vocals & Garnet does the (superb)
violins. It's a fine album, and introduced me to Archie Fisher's music.

I learned to like Garnet's music before I ever heard Stan's, and agree
that they are very different, but both well worth listening to. My only
disappointment with Garnet was the album _Speaking Softly in the Dark_
-- I just didn't like the feel of it at all. _Small Victories_ is
excellent. I saw Garnet once in concert in the Boston area, and agree
that you should see him if you ever get the chance.

You could try writing to his mother, who could put you in touch with the
correct person:

Valerie Rogers
c/o Valerie Enterprises
R.R. #1
Hannon, Ont.
L0R 1P0

Ask for a list of the records she distributes (all of Stan's and Garnet's,
for example).

A couple of years ago he was co-host (along with Bill Morrisey) of a
concert in Keene NH held in tribute to the Folkway of Peterborough
NH. It drew a large crowd and a lot of performers and was very good.

An exquisite song, that. Many other good tunes, as well.

"Off the Map" with Archie Fischer.

I am curious about the way in which Garnet tunes his guitar. The
above mentioned song, "Stars In Their Crown" is in the key of
A major. When Garnet strums the tonic chord, the top note is
an E (open 1st..?) and the next lower note is an A (open 2nd..?)

Actually, I believe Valerie is Garnett's sister-in-law, as she is Stan's
widow, but don't quote me or anything.

I would add a hearty n-th recommendation to the previous ones for the music
and wit of Garnet Rogers. He is presently on tour in Canada but will be in the
States this spring - check the current issue of Dirty Linen magazine for the
schedule.

Re: the Folkways concert he did a couple of years ago - as I understand,
the people at Folkways really helped him get his solo career going, and there
is a tremendously good song about it on Small Victories.

I too am a big fan of his wit as much as his music (which is also great!):
if you listen to any surviving live tapes of concerts with both Stan and
Garnet, frequently the funniest stories and the wittiest wisecracks are from
Garnet (I have their last Philadelphia concert on tape, where Garnet is
explaining about getting up on Saturday mornings and watching cartoons and
pretending to have eaten breakfast - it is a riot!)

And he is very personable - he sits and jokes with the crowd, and you can
always tell when he has arrived - there is the battered blue Volvo with
Canadian plates parked outside. Very unpretentious....

Obviously addicted,

Beth Morris

They also carry 6 Stan Roger titles:
Fogarty's Cove
Turnaround

Northwest Passage
For the Family
From Fresh Water

Cassettes are $9.95, discs $13.95, Canadian discs $19.95. Their address:
