Can anybody fill in the correct word in the 2nd verse,
and verify the "Isle of Mull" interpretation? Also,
are there any other verses to this song?

Thanks folk.netters

rob derrick.

Joy of My Heart
by The Corries
from Bonnet, Belt, and Sword

Sing ye o' the coolins of Skye
Of Harris or Eigge, of fair Iona
Joy of my heart, Isle o' Mull - [not sure about this]

Chorus:
Whether I wonder East or West
Waking or dreaming
Thou art with me
Joy of my heart, Isle o' Mull

Peat and heather, how you call me
Little wee (?boyin?) by the hillside
Joy of my heart, Isle o' Mull

Chorus:

Just to be very pedantic - Joy of My Heart is yet another
slightly daffy translation of a real gaelic song. It is NOT BY
the Corries. In fact I am fairly certain that they use as source the
strange music books issued to primary schools in scotland of 'Songs
from the Isles' which probably date from the 50s. I was given these
songs in my primary school in edinburgh as standard musical stuff
in 1963....

Is that the one which is a version of "Eilean mo chridh'" ?

This may explain something that has been worrying me.

I have a Corries CD, with a version of Cyril Tawney's "Grey Funnel Line",
which is called something else, and the words are very slightly
changed. The attribution is not Tawney, but our old friend Trad.

Happened to Ewan McColl too. In the credits for the movie The Committments,
his Springhill Mining Disaster is attributed to Trad.

There are the lyrics as sung by the Tannahil Weavers
in Cullen Bay :

Joy of My Heart

Sing ye o'the Cuillins o'Skye, Harris,
Dunvegan, Fair Iona,
Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh
Whether I wander east or west, waking
or dreaming, you are near me.
Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh.

Peat and heather, how they call me,
little wee bothan by the hillside,
Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh.
Whether I wander east or west, waking
or dreaming, you are near me.
Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh.

Friendly hearts are waiting to greet me,
welcoming arms are there to hold me.
Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh.
Whether I wander east or west, waking
or dreaming, you are near me.
Joy of my heart, Eilean Mulligh.

In reply to Craig concerning 'is that the one ....' the answer
is yes. And the source books I'm thinking of are called 'Songs of
the Western isles' with a picture of some of the hebrides in a squiggley
box and coloured unpleasant shades of dull green, blue and dusty
pink. And that is where the definitively awful version of 'Dream Angus'
comes from as well!!
