Does anyone have the lyrics to this song? I want to say Burl Ives
recorded it, but am working from childhood memories and hate to say how
long ago that was!
As best my memory functions, it begins something like this ...

Frog went a courtin' he did ride uh huh
Frog went a courtin' he did ride uh huh
Frog went a courtin' he did ride,
Had Miss Mousie by his side uh huh, uh huh, uh huh

I can hardly think of a song that has more versions than this one. (I
believe you're correct that Burl Ives recorded it. Numerous others have
too, of course; Odetta comes to mind.) What follows is the version I sing,
but I may have taken different verses from different places over the
years.

The froggy went a-courtin', he did ride, mm-hmm
The froggy went a-courtin', he did ride, mm-hmm
The froggy went a-courtin', he did ride
With a sword and pistol by his side, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm

He rode up to Miss Mousie's den, mm-hmm...
Said, Please, Miss Mousie, won't you let me in, mm-hmm...

First I must ask my Uncle Rat, mm-hmm...
And see what he will say to that, mm-hmm...

Miss Mousie, dear, won't you marry me? mm-hmm...
Over underneath the apple tree, mm-hmm...

Where will the wedding supper be? mm-hmm...
Underneath the same old apple tree, mm-hmm...

What will the wedding supper be? mm-hmm...
Hominy grits and black-eyed peas, mm-hmm...

The first to come was a bumblebee, mm-hmm...
With a bass fiddle on his knee, mm-hmm...

The last to come was a mockingbird, mm-hmm...
Said, This whole marriage is absurd, mm-hmmm...

Then they went home and went to bed, mm-hmm...
And pulled the covers up over their head, mm-hmm...

There's bread and cheese upon the shelf, mm-hmm...
If you want any more, you can sing it yourself, mm-hmm...

He may have ... it was also recorded by Doc Watson on his "Songs for
Little/Young (?) Pickers" album.

There's a really fun version by Doc Watson; I can't remember the name of the
album, but it's targeted at children, and has a blue (I think) cover with a
picture of Doc as a little squirt on the cover.

Does anyone know if the original lyrics, as registered with the copyright
office in London in 1580, are still around?

This song was also recorded by Mike Oldfield of Tubular Bells fame - I
forget which album it was on, it may have been Ommadawn or Hergest Ridge

There's a nice version of it On Jeff Warner & Jeff Davis' "Two Little
Boys" recording. Jeff Warner is living in the UK now and you can probably
get a copy from him if you see him billed at a club. If not, I ship to
the UK.

Look at the Judy and David homepage on the WWW. They have a songbook of
lyrics with about 20 verses of Frog Went a Courtin'.

Leslie Howarth folk-processed quite a nice, albeit tragic, version
he called "The Frog and the Mouse"
