Don't you mean REstarting a solo career? I feel he was at his
best on his first (solo) album "Soul of a City Boy" from 1964.

Soul of a City Boy is a classic, as is all of early Youngbloods.
Liner notes from SoaCB say Bobby Darrin got Jesse his first recording
contract. Anyone have any details on this?
Tried to find some new copies of my worn out vinyl of the Youngbloods,
but all I could find was an english vinyl of Elephant Mountain.
Anything else in print?

Jeffrey Cain was a friend of Jesse's and I remember him hitch-hiking in
Marin County (where everyone on Racoon lived) and I picked him up. I was
a disk jockey in town and we ended up doing some demo recordings that I
played on the air. He didn't have a car and didn't really live at any
fixed address and so we eventually lost contact. There was something about
him that struck me as a frail soul. That was 20 years ago - I was hoping
that someone had heard something about him in recent years.

Thanks, Brent. I've been intermittently looking for a CD release
of this (lost my vinyl copy), and just noticed on CDconnection.com
that it is finally out:
oNE17526 YOUNG*JESSE COLIN SOUL OF A CITY BOY
$9.70 ONE WAY 9/95 NEW RELEASE
...and cheap, at that! Jesse's version of "Four in the morning
(and the rain is pouring down)" -- or whatever it's called -- on
that album surpasses any subsequent versions I've heard.

Amazing! Watching some TV news about 10 years ago
showing a similar california disaster (say a mud slide),
I think I saw the Youngblood's drunmmer (Joe Bauer??)
in that position (wrecked house). But I'm not certain.

Hell hath no fury like the "natural" disasters in California. Of course,
I contend that things have gotten measurably worse since my ex moved
to L.A.. ;) Malibu Fire, LA Quake, Rodney King riots, OJ. I shudder to
think what might have happened if she'd moved to Marin.
As for Soul of a City Boy... what a killer album. Classic stuff like
"Take to Whiskey," "Four in the Morning" and "Stranger Love." If anybody
hears about that recording being reissued, PLEASE let me know.

That sounds like it could have been the floods of 1982 - I don't remember
anything about Joe Bauer but lots of people in West Marin lost houses in
that one. I'm pretty sure that he's been dead for some years now but I
believe it was cancer and not a mud slide.
This recent firestorm burned for more than a week taking out a major
portion of the Point Reyes National Park and burning all the way West to
the beach it look the Pacific Ocean to stop it. In addition to Jesse's
house being lost, I believe that movie director John Carpenter's place was
burned to the ground. It started with 4 teenagers not putting a campfire
out.
I think you're getting your newsfeed a little slower than the rest of us
but yes, he did run his music business from his home. His studio did not
burn but his nearby house was distroyed. I live in Marin and the story in
the local paper said that he was in the process of closing down his music
company before the fire and that he was moving to Hawaii where he and his
wife have been running a part time coffee business (huh?).
His ex-wife and children from that marriage still live in West Marin and
there was mention that the kids, who are involved in the music business,
would like to keep the studio going in one form or another. I believe
that all his post-Youngblood solo albums were recorded there as well as
some of the last few Youngblood albums. They were pretty evenly split
between being recorded there and at Banana's (the lead guitarist) studio.
I heard Jesse play a solo appearance in the Bay Area in February and he
sure hasn't lost his touch on stage. It had been some years since I had
heard him and he sounded great.
