The cover feature is about the little-known roots music of
Guinea-Bissau and their emerging star Manecas Costa. We also have
two more travel-based pieces ? a few late nights and bleary mornings
checking out Lisbon and a visit to Oriente Cuba to investigate the
Franco-Haitian traditions. Back home, we unfold the story of the
North East’s mighty Folkworks organisation, spend Whit Monday at
Bampton and talk to London-based Greek singer Athena Andreadis,
Israeli exile Gilad Atzmon and Scottish musician/producer Jim
Sutherland. Then onwards globally we meet Brazil’s Cibelle, Turkey’s
Bosphorus, Uzbekistan’s Sevara Nazarkhan, Iraq’s Kazem El-Saher,
Portugal’s Fernando Lameirinhas and lots more including our usual
vast news and reviews coverage. And there's a competition to win

* * fRoots Radio is the monthly aural companion to each issue. The
July edition should go on line on Wednesday June 11th and recent
programmes are archived.
