I recently saw an ad for a new album from Bonnie Koloc. This little ad
opened up a 30-year-old file cabinet in the back of my head. Unfortunately
the janitor had cleaned out everything I remembered about her.

Who was she with way back when? I grew up in Chicago, and I think that's
where I first heard her name--is she from there?

Chicago is right. I used to watch a strange, syndicated TV show (in
Philadelphia) that originated in Chicago - this was in 1969 or `70 - and
that`s where I heard her. She was, if I recall correctly, a good, gutsy
folk-blues singer.

If my memory serves correctly, Bonnie found first fame in Chicago at
either (or both) Earl of Old Towne and/or Old Town School of Folk
Music. Her first commercial was the old (1960's) theme for United
Air Lines [can you see the other side, from where you live].

She is, however, from Iowa.

Bonnie Koloc's album (I think "Close Up") was my favorite album for
several years, and I used to love hearing her sing on the near North Side
in Chicago around 1977-1979. Her style was very clean and spare--folksy
with a little blues--and she did a good bit of acapella stuff, or some
with just a bass or minimalist piano or guitar. All kinds of good memories
come back thinking about that album. I'll bet I still have it. I think
I'll try digging it out tonight and see if I can figure out how to work my
turntable.

I saw her recent album and immediately bought it, but I'm going to have to
sell it back for $2 or whatever they'll give me. It's overproduced,
lightweight, just doesn't have the soul of what I remember.

There used to be an influential folk scene in Chicago in the 70's,
which gave rise to performers like Steve Goodman and John Prine.
Bonnie Koloc was part of that scene. I liked her first album best,
it had terrific songs and performances such as "Rainy Day Women"
and "After All This Time." I used to go to a club called The
Quiet Knight a lot back then. I don't think that club's around
anymore -- does anyone know?

Yes I remember Bonnie. And the Earle of Oldetown and the other clubs on
Rush Street, etc. There is a new Steve Goodman anthology album out. It
has a bunch of Mike Smith songs on it. Mike still lives in Chicago and
plays local clubs occasionally. Bonnie recorded one of his songs too, I
think. At least one of her albums, With You On My Side, was released on
Flying Fish. You could try calling them at 1 800 394 3474 for info on a
new one. Call me for info on Mike's catalog!

I missed the previous posting(s) on this thread (damn!). Is Bonnie still
around? Recording? For that matter, is the 'Earle' still there. I used
to go there as often as I could in the late 60's / early 70's. But became
a married-with-children-responsible-adult (yeah, right) and moved to Ohio
and lost track.

What about Fred Holstein (sp?), another regular at the Earle in those days?
Wasn't he an owner of the Earle at one point?

Oh yes, Bonnie is still around and plays the Chicago area - usually at a
club called FitzGeralds in Berwyn, Ill. It was Eddie Holstein who had a
club called Holsteins'. Earl Pionke, who owned Earl of Old Town is still
around - there was talk about a new club, but not yet. There was recently
a benefit here for Bob Gibson which turned out to be a reunion of sorts
with lots of Chicago's folk legends on hand - lots of memories.

I saw her years ago in Wash DC. She was great. She did one album. had a
couple of big time folks cover her songs and disappeared. Glad to see she
is still out there.

This 11 years after this thread was posted but I had to say something.
I saw Bonnie Koloc at the Earle several times, Fitzgeralds, the Pump Room in the Ambassador East, She was definitely a favorite of mine./ Never understood why she never "broke out" - what an instrument ! The American Airlines ad "Mother Country" made me cry almost every time I listened to it on her album. Her highs are so pure and sweet, her bluesy vocals with the just enough down home midwest (Iowa) folk never failed to move me. One life long highlight I will never forget was when I saw her at the old "Taste of Chicago" when it was on the old Navy Pier before it became the tourist trap that it is today. I stood in in the front row and she asked for a volunteer, I hesitated a second and then I was on stage next to her. I danced, the crowd roared, she said she should take me on tour with her. She had no idea what that meant to that shy 20 something at the time. Wish I could get video of that moment. Bonnie do you ever come to San Francisco, I left my beloved Chicago 15 years ago. Miss looking up Bonnie's next show in The Reader !
