I'm looking for chords and lyrics to Spanish Civil War
songs, in particular "Viva La Quince Brigada." I think
the chord progression is Am - G - F - E but I don't know
all the words. I know that one verse goes something
like

Luchamos contra los moros
Ay Manuela, ay Manuela
Mercenarios y fascistas
Ay Manuela, ay Manuela
No tenemos ni aviones
Ay Manuela, ay Manuela
Ni tanques ni camiones
Ay Manuela, ay Manuela
(and two more lines---something about being
determined to beat Franco)

If anyone knows this song or other Spanish Civil War
songs please let me know.

Thanks!

This was on an EP (them was the days!) by the Ian Campbell Folk Group,
back in the mid- 60's. My brother used to have it, I'll check if he
still has. Other tracks were (I'm remembering 30 years back now) Boys of
Wexford, Hunting the Wren, and Peat Bog Soldiers. An excellent record.

Dave,

In the Pete Seeger book "The Bells Of Rhymney" he has it like this:

Viva la Quince Brigada,
Rhumbala, rhumbala rhumbala,
Vive la Quince Brigada,
Rhumbala, ... etc.

Luchamos contra los Morros,
Rhumbala, rhumbala, rhumbala,
Luchamos contra los Morros,
Rhumbala, ... etc.,
Mercenarios y facistas,
Ay Manuela, Ay Manuela,
Mercenarios y facistas,
Ay Manuela, Ay Manuela,

Solo es nuestro deseo ... etc.
Acabar con el fascismo ... etc.

En el frente de jarama ... etc.
No tenemos ni aviones,
Ni tankes, ni can~ones, Ay Manuela.
No tenemos ni aviones,
Ni tankes, ni can~ones, Ay Manuela.

Ya Salimos de Espan~a ... etc.
Por luchar en otras frentes ... etc.

(repeat first verse).

Doesn't look like it matches up with what you had above. I'm not familiar
with the tune, so I can't pass judgement on Seeger's version. I have the
music in the book here, though, so I may give it a try.

Hope this helps,
Nick Worth

I left out a line. The first verse should go:

Viva la Quince Brigada,
Rhumbala, rhumbala rhumbala,
Viva la Quince Brigada,

Rhumbala, ... etc.
Que se ha cubierta de gloria,
Ay Manuela, Ay Manuela

Also, the time signature changes in the middle of the song - from 2/4 to
3/4. The chords Seeger listed are are follows:

2/4
Am
Viva la Quince Brigada,
E
Rhumbala, rhumbala, rhumbala
Am
Viva la Quince Brigada,
E
Rhumbala, rhumbala, rhumbala

3/4
Am G
Que se ha cubierta de gloria,
G F E
Ay Manuela, Ay Manuela

And if you want to hear it sung well, catch the Walkabout
Clearwater Chorus some time and ask for it. I suspect it
helps that our chorus director's father was one of those
Americans who fought in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade; it
makes us a bit more aware of the song's history.

There definitely seem to be two versions of this running
around. Not surprisingly, we do the same one Pete does. On
the other hand, the alternate version does include

> Soloex nuestro deseo, Our only wish,
> Acabar con el fascismo, To put an end to fascism,

which are lines I've never heard. (That also seems to be
missing something... or is it a bridge?)

Pronunciation pitfall for Americans:

> Ni tankes, ni canones, Nor tanks nor guns,

The first n in "can~ones" is an enye, so it's pronounced
more or less as "can YONE nays" . Yes, that can be confused
with "canyons" -- but only in the same way, and to the same
degree, that a military cannon can be confused with a
musical canon in English.

(There's a pun lurking in there about not firing a canon
until you get past the bridge in the middle of the song, but
let's not...)

> Por Luchar en otras frontes, To fight on other fronts,

"otros frentes", I believe. Be careful here; get the gender
wrong and you wind up fighting "in other foreheads."

Here's the version in the Pluto Press "Big Red Songbook" (1977). The
rhythm doesn't match the time signature and as I don't remember the song
I can't fix it, if it's wrong in the first place, that is. Anyone? Any
corrections welcome, I don't speak Spanish. The translation is by Geoff
White.

Maybe you could put any songs you get on your website?

Sure, let's....

Actually, (and without grabbing the dictionary to make sure the foot's not
in the mouth) I believe all usages of "cannon," no matter how diverse they
are now, all come from the same root: round or circle. So the cannon ball,
the repeating song (equally called cannon or round) the cycle of ceremonies
of the Church year and even the closure of accepted, official Books - all
have the same root. I'm not sure about Dyan Cannon (Samile Friesen) but
she has some nice rounded bits.

Interesting word processing. (To me, anyway.)

And while we're being wordological (I use that term since Phil doesn't seem
to visit this group often) it came up the other day that there is a real
difference in repeating events that are described as "cyclical" or
"circular." I just wanted to be sure that was clear.
