I was hoping someone could tell me about the song 'I'm My Own Grandpa'.

I would like to know of any recordings, lyrics, and chords.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'M MY OWN GRANDPA
(Moe Jaffe, Dwight Latham)

Now many many years ago when I was twenty-three
I was married to a widow who was pretty as can be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her and soon they too were wed.

Oh, I'm my own grandpa
I'm my own grandpa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
Oh, I'm my own grandpa.

This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life.
My daughter was my mother, 'cause she was my father's wife.
To complicate the matter even though it brought me joy,
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.
My little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad,
And so became my uncle though it was very sad.
For if he was my uncle then that also made him brother
Of the widow's grown-up daughter who of course was my step-mother.

Father's wife then had a son who kept him on the run,
And he became my grandchild for he was my daughter's son.
My wife is now my mother's mother and it makes me blue,
Because although she is my wife she's my grandmother, too.

Now if my wife is my grandmother then I'm her grandchild,
And every time I think of it it nearly drives me wild,
For now I have become the strangest case I ever saw.
As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa.

This one goes back to grandpa's time.

The chorus goes:

I'm my own grandpa (repeat)
It sounds funny I know,
But it really is so,

I'm my own grandpa

And then follows a complex family situation that somehow
resembles the homelife of the Hortons of Days of Our Lives,
or perhaps the Lords of One Life to Live.

It has been recorded by a lot of people, such as David
Grisman (I think it's on his Home Is Where the Heart Is
double LP on Rounder), Sidesaddle (the Grandma version;
there was one of those by a female country singer long
ago, but I don't recall which one), etc.

A recording is currently available on Dr. Demento's "Country Corn" CD
along with some other classics including "Ode to the Little Brown Shack
Out Back" by Billy Edd Wheeler.

The song was written back in the mid-1940s by Tin Pan Alley songwriters Dwight
Latham and Moe Jaffe...I think I recall reading an interview with Jaffe where
he said he got the idea from an old vaudeville sketch. It's been done by lots
of folks over the years. Lonzo and Oscar had a big hit with it, I think Homer
and Jethro covered it as well. More recent versions include one by Ray
Stevens, and one by the all-female bluegrass band Sidesaddle in which they
change it to "I'm My Own Grandma".

It was recorded by Michael Cooney on a wonderful album of children's
songs, called "Pure Unsweetened - Live in Concert." It may still be
available in one format or another from Andy's Front Hall
(Voorheesville, NY) or Elderly (Lansing, Michigan). Good luck.

The song was written by Moe Jaffe and Dwight Latham, and copyrighted in
1947; Latham says he got the idea and the method by which a man's could
become his own grandpa from a short piece by Mark Twain. Words, chords,
and a list of recordings are in *Rise Up Singing!*, p. 72 (SING OUT! P.O.
Box 5253, Bethlehem, PA 18015-0253).

I know nothing about recordings, and have no musical abilities, but I
*do* know the lyrics. I was raised singing this silly little song.

Oh, many, many years ago
When I was twenty-three

I was married to a widow

Who was pretty as can be

This widow had a grown-up daughter

Who had hair of red

My father fell in love with her

And soon they two were wed!

This made my dad my son-in-law

And changed my very life,
For my daughter was my mother
'Cause she was my father's wife
To complicate the matter
'Tho it really brought me joy

I soon became the father

Of a bouncing baby boy!

This little baby then became
A brother-in-law to Dad

And so became my uncle

Tho it made me very sad

For if he was my uncle

Then that also made him brother

Of the widow's grown-up daughter

WHo of course is my step-mother!

Oh, I'm my own grandpa!
I'm my own grandpa!

It sounds funny I know
But it really is so

Oh, I'm my own grandpa

My father's wife then had a son
Who kept them on the run

And he became my grandchild

For he was my daughter's son!

My wife is now my mother's mother

And it makes me blue
Because although she is my wife,
She's my grandmother too!

Now if my wife is my grandmother

Then I'm her grandchild

And every time I think of it

It nearly drives me wild

For now I have become

The strangest case you ever saw -
As husband of my grandmother
I am my own grandpa!
Oh, I'm my own grandpa!
I'm my own grandpa!

It sounds funny I know,

But it really is so

Oh, I'm my own grandpa!

This made the narrator the father (in-law) of his father.
If he is his father's father, then clearly he is his own grandpa,
and all the rest of the

[ snipped part of the song]

is redundant.

Still, a lot of fun. Thanx for posting. Finding the words to this,
which as a kid I was fascinated to listen to on 78s, is another great
Internet thrill -- just like "Cigareeets and Wusky and Wild Wild Wimmin".

best regards,

I know that the Guy Lombardo band did it in the late '40s.

Not to sound "tabloid" but this reminds me of the story a few years back
when Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones, then in his 50's, married a very
young woman of 19. Soon after, it was reported that his son was dating
the young woman's mom. If he had married her, he too would have become
his own Grandpa. Go figure.

The song will be featured in a movie starring that idiot who married
that slez woman Rozanne Arnold Barr. His name is Tom Arnold, the movie I
believe is called "the Stupids." It is a take off on dumb and dumber.
A good version of the song was recorded by David Grismond. Chet Atkins
also recored a version of it..
