I'M MY OWN GRANDPA
(Moe Jaffe, Dwight Latham)
Now many many years ago when I was twenty-three
I was married to a widow who was pretty as can be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her and soon they too were wed.
Oh, I'm my own grandpa
I'm my own grandpa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
Oh, I'm my own grandpa.
This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life.
My daughter was my mother, 'cause she was my father's wife.
To complicate the matter even though it brought me joy,
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy.
My little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad,
And so became my uncle though it was very sad.
For if he was my uncle then that also made him brother
Of the widow's grown-up daughter who of course was my step-mother.
Father's wife then had a son who kept him on the run,
And he became my grandchild for he was my daughter's son.
My wife is now my mother's mother and it makes me blue,
Because although she is my wife she's my grandmother, too.
Now if my wife is my grandmother then I'm her grandchild,
And every time I think of it it nearly drives me wild,
For now I have become the strangest case I ever saw.
As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa.

This one goes back to grandpa's time.
The chorus goes:
I'm my own grandpa (repeat)
It sounds funny I know,
But it really is so,
I'm my own grandpa
And then follows a complex family situation that somehow
resembles the homelife of the Hortons of Days of Our Lives,
or perhaps the Lords of One Life to Live.

The song was written back in the mid-1940s by Tin Pan Alley songwriters Dwight
Latham and Moe Jaffe...I think I recall reading an interview with Jaffe where
he said he got the idea from an old vaudeville sketch. It's been done by lots
of folks over the years. Lonzo and Oscar had a big hit with it, I think Homer
and Jethro covered it as well. More recent versions include one by Ray
Stevens, and one by the all-female bluegrass band Sidesaddle in which they
change it to "I'm My Own Grandma".

It was recorded by Michael Cooney on a wonderful album of children's
songs, called "Pure Unsweetened - Live in Concert." It may still be
available in one format or another from Andy's Front Hall
(Voorheesville, NY) or Elderly (Lansing, Michigan). Good luck.

This made the narrator the father (in-law) of his father.
If he is his father's father, then clearly he is his own grandpa,
and all the rest of the
[ snipped part of the song]
is redundant.
Still, a lot of fun. Thanx for posting. Finding the words to this,
which as a kid I was fascinated to listen to on 78s, is another great
Internet thrill -- just like "Cigareeets and Wusky and Wild Wild Wimmin".

I know that the Guy Lombardo band did it in the late '40s.
