I tried to transcribe the words to this lovely song from a Red Mountain
White Trash recording. I've got most of it, but I just couldn't
understand some of the words.
Can anyone out there fill in the blanks?
Rose of Alabama
Across the Mississippi vale ???????????????
??? upon the cotton bale, she's the rose of Alabama
<chorus>
Oh brown rosie, rose of Alabama
Sweet tobacco posy, she's the Rose of Alabama
The river rolls, the crickets sing, the lightning bugs flash on the wing
Oh, I wish ??????? the rose of Alabama
<chorus>
To the Allegheny swept away, I nearly froze today
All that my lips would say is the rose of Alabama
<chorus>
So fare thee well Miss Liza Jane, and fare thee well you girls of fame
All your charms are put to shame by the rose of Alabama
<chorus>
Cheers, and thanks in advance.

Bo,
I don't know the lyrics, but I did hear the song on a public television
show a couple of days ago. The show, produced by Alabama Public
Television, was on the music of the Civil War era as performed by Bobby
Horton of Three on a String. I don't know where you are located, but
Bobby Horton is pretty well-known around Birmingham as the expert on
Civil War-era music.
Maybe APT could tell you how to get in touch with Bobby. Their number
is 328-8756 (local Birmingham) or 1-800-239-5233.
Good Luck!

I saw that! Very nice show, and I wish I'd taped it. (I'm in Scottsboro,
so I get APT). That performance and the Red Mtn. White Trash recording
are what kind of inspired me to learn this one.
Cheers!

If you like that one, you'd probably like "Flower From the Fields of
Alabama" as warbled by John Beam on Double Decker Stringband's
Marimac tape #9035.
