because no one knows when the contractors will have enough done to
make the park both usable and safe....and with 400-500 musicans and
volunteers involved, all of whom have other committments, there is
just no way!! (I have worked on this festival every year for 20 years,
and I am just as sad as anyone....but I think next year it will be
back better than before).....
here is the post from the FSGW page :http://www.fsgw.org/
Please note that the 1997 Washington Folk Festival has been
canceled!
Due to construction in progress at Glen Echo Park, the Folklore
Society and the
National Park Service have decided that it is not possible to maintain
the quality of
the Festival and adequately accommodate the expected audience. The
construction
at Glen Echo will result in much needed renovation to water, sewer,
electric, and
phone services as well as providing landscaping and paving of the
public spaces.
While we are disappointed that we will not be able to hold the
Festival this year, we
are looking forward to holding the 21st Annual Washington Folk
Festival in a much
improved facility on June 6 and 7, 1998.
Presented by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington in
cooperation with the National Park Service, the
Washington Folk Festival is a two day event full of concerts, dances,
crafts and stories. The Washington Folk Festival
highlights the amazing cultural diversity of the Washington area by
featuring more than 450 local artists representing
more than 30 countries as well as many of our own folk traditions.
Planning and preparations are already underway for the Washington
Folk Festival at Glen Echo Park. This is a free
event and showcases a wide variety of Washington area performers from
all ethnic and geographic backgrounds.
This is an all-volunteer event: everyone, including the performers,
planners, technicians, and sound engineers,
EVERYONE donates their services. We need your help to carry out this
Festival. If you are interested in volunteering for
a committee or chairing one, please contact Festival Coordinators Dean
Clamons at 703-631-9655 or e-mail , or Beth
Curren 301-657-2789 or e-mail. Volunteers are needed for crafts,
hospitality, publicity, planning, and operations. There
will still be some work week-ends at Glen Echo this spring. For
information contact Beth. The Festival is a wonderful
event. It can only happen through the efforts of people like you.
