So what is the deal here? Some of us in the folk community were hit
hard by the recent passing of folk legend Townes Van Zandt. But what
tiny bit ever hit this newsgroup has "dropped off" instantaneously.

Any replies???

There is no moderator. If posts disappear from your site, it's because
they were canceled by the author or they expired.

There is no moderator. What is here is whatever people post. Plenty
of people were saddened by this news; you're not alone.

This is no news group moderator so any lack of coverage of the death of
Townes Van Zandt
reflects the interest of the newsgroup members in that subject.

got to http://www.dejanews.com and do a search using the name Townes
Van Zandt. You'll see that there were more than forty postings.
It seems as if there was an immediate outpouring of grief, along
with a few of us who felt that little of the grief was tempered by
realization that Townes was ill with alcoholism, compulsive gambling, etc.
Now, with the passage of time, the number of postings has naturally trailed
off.

Please learn how Usenet works before you start accusing people. There is NO
moderator for rec.music.folk. The fast rolloff times are the fault of YOUR
ISP's Usenet server. All of the Van Zandt message are still up on mine.

There is a good point here. I currently have only 370 messages
available to load up on rec.music.folk. I know it varies. Of those
370, I found about 6-7 under "a wild one" and Townes van Zant. Just a
question, how many posts do any of you have available to you. I may
want to ask my Usenet server to expand my coverage, if that is possible.
The oldest post I saw in a quick scan was 1/2/97
far...@pe.net

Expiration dates differ from site to site. They are often 3 or 7 days
after first appearance. They can be set on a group-by-group basis by the
system administrator.

Hey Dave - you'll be gald to know I took the time to
get a copy of Townes Van Zandt's CD (Live and Obscure)...
and have listened to it several times since learning of
his death. As a regular reader of this gourp, I get a long
list of artists from the great discussions and unfortunately
had not made it around to Townes before his passing...
I was impressed by what I heard...he certainly had a gift
for setting a mood and a scene in his songs...

It's unfortunate that often we learn of someone only after they have
passed through this world...a thought...where were all the
Townes posts BEFORE he died?

Any other's out there in the Folk music scene that we should celebrate
NOW - before they are gone? It's been a tough year with so many
folk artists dying.

Hmm - a final thought - I liked Pancho and Lefty long before I
knew who wrote it. In more recent years I make a point of
checking the author of song - and often get pleasently sidetracked
into the work of the songwriter rather than the covering artist.

let her rip.....
