Anyone know any good songs about turning 40 (or maybe
just getting older?). I'm making a birthday mix and I'm
stuck...

Thanks,
Mercy

The Wolfe Tones do a great song about what its like for a folksinger
to turn forty: "Janie Mac, I"m Nearly Forty". Its on their 25th
Anniversary tape.

So it is not folk, but how about the Beatles "When I'm Sixy
Four"? Also, David Wilcox has a song about turning 30 on his album Home
Again. It is called "Top of the Rollercoaster." I heard Tom Paxton sing
a song about how irritated he was to be receiving Prevention magazine at
65 just becuase the AARP was trying to solicit memberships. I don't know
however, if or where it is recorded.
Have fun

The WolfeTones perform a song:

"Oh Janey Mack I'm nearly forty,
I think my hair is turning grey.
I'll be on the pension very shortly
And how I long for yesterday."

I'm pretty sure they wrote it, too. What I typed out
for you is the chorus.

Well, here's a favorite of mine. I believe it enters our ken from
Ewan MacColl's collecting it from Sam Larner. Tune's there in DigTrad
if you want it. I heard Ewan & Peggy sing this together. She really
belted out the chorus. One would almost have thought she meant it.

MAIDS WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG NEVER WED AN OLD MAN

An old man came courting me
Hey do a dority
An old man came courting me
Me being young
An old man came courting me
All for to marry me
Maids when you're young never wed an old man

For he's got no faloodorum, fadidledo doorum
For he's got no faloodoorum, fadidleday
He's got no faloorum, he's lost his ding doorum
So maids when you're young, never wed an old man

Now when we went to the church, hey do a dority
When we went to the church, me being young
When we went to the church, he left me in the lurch
Maids when you're young, never wed an old man
Now when we went to our bed, hey do a dority
Now when we went to our bed, me being young
When we went to our bed, he neither done nor said
Maids when you're young never wed an old man

Now when he went to sleep, hey do a dority
Now when we went to sleep, me being young
When we went to sleep, out of bed I did creep
Into the arms of a handsome young man

And I found his falodoorum, fa didle dodoorum
I found his faloodoorum, fa didle all day
I found his falodoorum and he got my dingdoorum
so maids when you're young never wed an old man

Eliza Gilkyson has a wonderful song about turning 40 called "Odyssey".
Sorry, but I can't recall the CD name but it's one of her more recent
ones.
