(Some of the New Country sounds I hear today, are reminiscent of what
Fotheringay and Fairport did in the early 70's. What do you think?}
Anyway re Donahue:
Where is he, and what's he doing? Anyone know?
Phil Floyd.
I've always been a great fan of Jerry's guitar playing as well. I had the
good fortune of seeing him live with Fairport Convention, around the time
they did "Rising for the Moon".
I'm sure he made at least one solo album (at least one under his own name)
in the US during the eighties. I've even heard a few tracks from it at a
friend's home (way back then) but wasn't impressed so much. Unfortunately
I don't remember the details.

According to the announcer on Fairport's 25th Anniversary Concert CD,
Jerry's latest album is called "Neck of the Woods". Also, Jerry is
rumoured to be working on a Fotheringay reunion with Vicki Clayton on
vocals...I'll believe it when I see it. But why hasn't anyone mentioned the
Hushpuppies adverts?:-)

As someone has mentioned, Jerry Donahue is now playing with a
group called The Hellecasters consisting of Jerry and 2 other
guitarists, Johnny Jourgenson and Will Ray. Johnny Jourgenson
is also Michael Nesmith's current touring guitarist (yes, the
the same Michael Nesmith that was in the Monkees - who has released
close to 15 solo albums since leaving the Monkees; all of them
excellent, btw. Nesmith is also on the net and posts periodically
to the newsgroup alt.music.monkees - a very friendly place, by the
way. Email me for his net address if you're interested)
The Hellecasters have two records out, "Return of the Hellecasters"
and "Escape from Hollywood". Both are terrific. No vocals, all
"guitar" instrumentals played with verve, humour and spellbinding
virtuosity. Their version of "Orange Blossom Special" leaves one
slack-jawed and gasping. (Traditionalists may also hate it..)

-mm

I bought "Neck of the Wood" fairly recently - had to special-order it
at HMV. I'd _love_ to find "Telecasting", but I think that's the one
that's out of print. If anyone knows how to get it, please email me!

Jerry is a very sought after session guitarist and really pretty busy.
Recently he has played a lot with Chris Rea (both live and in studio).
Other people have already mentioned his two solo albums Telecasting and
Neck of the Wood. Recently, he has recorded two albums with John Jorgensson
(of Desert Rose Band-fame) and someone else whose name I've forgotten as
The Hellecasters (Night of the Hellecasters and Return of the Hellecasters).
They have garish 50s B-movie covers and seem to be readily available around
here. He has also recorded a pretty rockish album with Doug Morter (ex-
Albion Band) and a bunch of backup musicians as The Backroom Boys. The
acclaim he has in guitarist circles can be measured from the fact that
Fender have released a "Jerry Donahue" signature Telecaster (actually two -
the whole works and a cheaper scaled-down version). I'm pretty sure there's
also a tabulature book out to accompany Neck Of The Woods.
Hope that's enough info for starters...
Martin
Jerry is also involved with a groyp called the Hellecasters, an all guitar group.
They have two CDs out on Rio Records - "Escape From Hollywood" and "Return
of the Hellecasters" - great stuff!
