I know of three versions. The Temptations, mid-60's; Edwin Starr,
about 1967, and Bruce Springsteen, 1986.
Dan, ad nauseam
Edwin Starr had a #1 hit with it in 1970.
Bruce took it to #8 in 1986.
The Temptations didn't crack the top-40 with it.

ISTR reading that the Temptations' version was never released as a
single.

The semi-legendary and highly political lomg-lived Canadian punk band DOA
(still out there fighting the good fight to this day) recorded a killer
version (with Starr-like vocals-- right down to the "Good God, y'all!"'s--
by DOA's guitarist, gravel-throated vocalist and grey eminence, Joe
"Shithead" Keighley) a year or so before Springsteen's (and their version
cut his!)-- it was released, with several other songs, on a special 12" 45
RPM EP called "War on 45", which is probably highly collectable nowadays--
don't know if they ever put it on an album.
Well worth seeking out if you admire the song, and what sensible lover of
fine music doesn't?

That is correct, which explains why it wasn't even a candidate for the
top-40 charts.
