I will put this song to nevada ../c/leonard_cohen
But before this song goes to nevada can somebody please add the songwriter,
a record where it's played and perhaps some melody.
That would be very great. Thank You very much, to all of You.
TENNESSEE WALTZ
By ?
(intro) |D|GDA|D|D|
(VERSE 1)
D D7 G
I was dancin' with my darlin to the Tennessee Waltz
D Bm E A
When an old friend I happened to see.
D D7 G
I introduced him to my darlin' and while they were dancin'
D G D A D
my friend stole my sweetheart from me.
(CHORUS 1)
D D7 G D
I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz
Bm E A
'cause I know just how much I have lost
D D7 G
Yes I lost my little darlin' the night they were playin'
D G D A D
That beautiful Tennessee Waltz
(solo, same as a verse)
(CHORUS 1) or CHORUS 1 alone again
(VERSE 2)
D D7 G
Now I wonder how a dance like the Tennessee Waltze
D Bm E A
Could have broken my heart so complete
D D7 G
Well I couldn't blame my darlin', and who could help fallin'
D G D A D
In love with my darlin' so sweet
(CHORUS 2)
D D7 G D
Well it must be the fault of the Tennessee Waltz
Bm E A
Wish I'd known just how much it would cost
D D7 G
But I didn't see it commin', it's all over but the cryin'
D G D A D
Blame it all on the Tennessee Waltz
(solo, same as a verse)
(CHORUS 2)
New second verse written by Cohen
D D7 G
She goes dancin' with the darkness to the Tennessee Waltz
D Bm E A
and I feel like I'm falling apart
D D7 G
and it's stronger than drink and it's deeper than sorrow
D G D A D
this darkness she left in my heart
I remember the night ... (CHORUS 1)

Written and originally performed by Pee Wee King (and His Golden West Cowboys)
back in the 40s. Patti Page had a monster pop hit with it in the 50s, it's
been done by dozens of people since in forms from bluegrass to country to pop
to folk to...well, whatever. I'll even admit to having a version by Anne
Murray that's done very nicely.

The Nashville Bluegrass Band does a sterling version of this on one of their
albums...either "Nashville Bluegrass Band" or "Idle Time", I forget which.

A good time to mention Jesse Winchester's "Brand New Tennessee Waltz." Just
an aside.
Hi All:
Wanted to post about an excelent folk festival held every year on the
campus of Douglass College ( Rutgers University) in New Brunswick, N.J. It's
FREE! and its coming up this weekend.
I'll cut to the part that will most interest readers of this list first.
One of the three stages at the fest will feature "New Folk Artists" who all
won somekind of "contest". There are six acts altogether:
- The New Middle Class
- Cathy Winter
- Catherine Moon
- Kathy McMearty
- Virginia Wagner
- Antje Duvekot
I have heard "The New Middle Class" on the Jerry Tracy Saturday Morning
folk music program ( whatever he calls it) on WFDU-FM 88.9fm and I
thought they were great. From Westchester County, N.Y., I believe... and
they're a duo. Sort of like "The Story" I thought... only with the second
voice being a male. ( Don't shoot me if this is wrong... I'm working from
memory).
But I'm sure all the acts will be great... and it is free after all.
On the main stage, they are having some other stuff. The "main
theme" this year is a celebration of Puerto Rican culture so there will be
several Puerto Rican bands. The acts include:
- El Combo Latino (from Elizabeth, NJ)
- John Sotomayo (sp?) and Alvin Medina
- John Jackson (traditional piedmont blues)
- Merce Ridgeway Jr. and the Pinehawkers ( music from the pinebarrons)
- Dirty Birdy Jugband
- John Kirk and Trish Miller with Mike and Linda Maday ( Old Timey Dance
Music)
- Elaine Silver ( an WFDU favorite)
- Bill Mooney ( storyteller)
- Beppe Gamdetta ( virtuoso guitarist)
There's also a children's stage ( that's probably where Elaine Silver
can be found), and food vendors, and a craftsmarket, and somekinda "Guitar
Workshop" or something. I mean... what more could a human being ask for?
The "official" name is apparently "The New Jersey Folk Festival" and
it's held on the campus of Douglass College which is part of my alma
mater - Rutgers University. Very easy to get to... just follow the signs
off the Jersey Turnpike right to Douglass - then find a place to park. ( Be
prepared - you might have to pay a small fee to park). It runs from 10am til
5pm this Saturday. Call 1-908-932-9174 for more information - and you might
mention that you read about it on the Internet.

Dry Branch Fire Squad also does a very good version of "Brand New Tennessee
Waltz."
My favorite recording, FWIW, is that made by one of our century's great
folk artists, Earl Taylor, on his "Body And Soul" album on Vetco.
