I am looking for the lyrics or a recording of a song called "I Did It Their
Way". It is a parody of the horrors of academic life and was sung to the tune
of "I Did It My Way". I heard it at the Phila. Folk Festival several years
ago, but I have no idea who wrote or recorded it. Any leads greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

Larry Povirk

I have heard Roy Bailey sing it in concert, and I think he wrote it.
Sorry, I don't know whether he (or anyone else) has recorded it.

I believe that "I Did It Their Way" was written by Bob Blue. Here are the
words as nearly as I can remember them.

I came, bought all my books, lived in the dorms, followed directions.
I worked, I studied hard, met lots of folks who had connections.
I crammed, They gave me grades, and may I say, not is a fair way.
But more, much more than this, I did it their way.

I learned all sorts of things, although I'm sure I'll never use them.
The courses that I took, were all required, I didn't choose them.
I learned, that to survive, it's best to act the doctrinaire way.
And so I buckled down and did it their way.

Yes, there were times I wondered why I had to crawl when I could fly,
I had my doubts, but after all, I clipped my wings, and learned to crawl.
I learned to bend, and in the end, I did it their way.

And so, my fine young friends, now that I am a full professor,
Where once I was oppressed, I've now become the cruel oppressor.
With me, you'll learn to cope. You'll learn to climb life's golden
stairway.
Like me, you'll see the light, and do it their way.

What can I do? What can I do? Take out your books. Read chapter two.
And if it seems just dull routine, don't talk to me, go see the Dean.
As long as they give me my pay, I'll do it their way.

Hope this helps.

Alan

Hi,

I heard Roy Bailey sing it at the Australian National Folk Festival, at
Easter 1996. It's very funny, and was accompanied by some very funny
stories of how to get on in academic life...(Roy Bailey is a retired
Professor of Sociology, I believe).

It has not, I think, been recorded by Roy; I dodn't know about others.

You could check out Roy's Home page:

cheers

Tim

I have it on a tape by "Fraser Union" out of Vancouver, BC. They are a
local group who apparently are all academics, so only perform
occasionally. The tune gets regular air-play on the Max Ferguson show in
CBC in Canada.

I got the tape from Black Swan records in Vancouver. Apparently the
group only makes up a few tapes at a time, mainly to sell at gigs.

I've heard Michael Cooney do this, but don't know if he's
putit on record. It's not on the one old Folk Legacy album
of his I have. If it's out there on vinyl or tape somewhere
I'd love to have it myself. I do remember the last verse
rhymes "professor" and "opressor"... and that somewhere
"you say I'm mean" (or something) matches with "go see the dean."

It was written by Bob Blue of Amherst, Massachusetts, and it is on his
cassette tape of the same name (a re-issuing of an LP called "Erica
Levine and Friends"). Bob can be reached at bb...@k12.oit.umass.edu,
and the person responsible for compiling the Bob Blue songbook, issued
just this year, is Julie Gordon, Aher...@aol.com.

These words were written by Bob Blue, now an officer in the Children's
Music Network. I'm sure Bob won't mind your having the words:
**********************************
I came, bought all my books, lived in the dorm, followed directions.
I worked, I studied hard; met lots of folks who had connections.
I crammed, they gave me grades -- though may I say, not in a fair way--
But more, much more than this, I did it THEIR wasy.

I memorized all sorts of things, although I know I'll never use them.
The courses that I took were all required; I didn't choose them.
I learned that to survive it's best to act the doctrinaire way,
And so I buckled down, and did it THEIR way.

But there were times I wondered why
I had to walk when I could fly.
I had my doubts, but after all --
I'd trimmed my wings, I'd learned to crawl.
I learned to bend, and in the end --
I did it THEIR way!

And so, my fine young friends, now that I am a full Professor,
Where once I was oppressed I have become the cruel oppressor.
Like me, you'll learn to cope, you'll learn to climb life's golden
stairway;
Like me, you'll see the light, and do it THEIR way.

So what can I say, what can I do?
Open your books, read chapter two,
And if to you it seems routine,
Don't speak to me: go see the Dean.

As long as they give me my pay,

I'll do it THEIR way!

Bob Blue is a genius. My daughter sang this for one of her classes when
she made the tenure grade as a professor at Berkeley.

The song is available on "Keepers 2", a collection album put out by
Minnesota Public Radio and available from the Public Radio Music Source
at 1-800-75-MUSIC.It's done by someone called "Bright Morning Star" and is
very well done, indeed. Just male vocal and piano. It's a hoot. There's
lots of other good stuff on the CD, too. The original of this version is
on "Sweet and Sour", FLying Fish Records, FF-478.

Roy Bailey wrote the parody and perfomed it at Sheffield University (I
think) when he retired as Professor of Social Work.

Apparently he decided not to give a speech and used the song instead.
He relates the introduction to the assembled company somethin along
the lines that follow:-

Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Professors, Lecturers, Students, students
families, pets, snails, slugs, creepy crawlies, and finally gentlemen
of the press.

Can't help with the word though.

Jeff

At the time, Bright Morning Star included Charlie King, Court Dorsey,
Cheryl Fox, Ken Giles, Stephen Snyder, and Marcia Taylor, and the
project musical director was George Fulginitti-Shakar. The limited
program notes on the cassette do not indicate who's singing it, but it's
not Charlie King, so that leaves only three possibilities.

sounds like Roy Bailey's song sung about his retirement from Academic Life.
Not sure if there's a recording.
