Anyone here ever heard the Tansads? I've enjoyed both their albums
'Up The Shirkers' and 'Flock', which combine a modern electric
guitar feel with a definate folk melody style. Great stuff.

Indeed, yes. Have recently purchased Flock (how does that compare to "Shirkers"?)
which was surprisingly heavy for a r.m.f recommendation, but it does have a
"folky" feel to the vocal/melody line. I'd need to listen to it some more for
a definitive review, I suppose, but first impressions were good.

Now, without r.m.f. and rec.music.world/celtic etc and their eclectic contents,
I may never have tried out the Tansads...

Clearly you don't read Folk Roots then! They did a cover feature on the
Tansads in June 1993, and have reviewed all three albums as they came
out. They've also been regularly played on Ian Anderson's Folk Routes
programme on the BBC World Service.

FYI, here's a discography that I posted to the Oysterband Discussion List
a few weeks ago. Note that they have *three* full-length albums, and a host
of singles, though many of the latter are now sadly out-of-print. I like
them all, but UP THE SHIRKERS remains my favourite .... While SHANDYLAND
is unlikely to be available from your local (even if you're reading this
in Britain :-) record shoppe, it *is* still possible to order this directly
from Probe Plus Recording/Distribution in Liverpool as I did earlier this
year.

This band is *excellent* IMHO, and fans of the OB should make every effort
to see them !! I've never had an opportunity to see/hear them live (come to
the US !! :-), but I've very much enjoyed all their singles and full-length
releases I've managed to pick up from here in the States:

Tansads Shandyland (1991) Wayward/Probeway 31CD
Brian Kant [4-track] (1992) Musidisc 109372 (CD-5)
Up the Shirkers (1993) Musidisc 109852
Up the Revolution [4 track] (1993) Musidisc 110052 (CD-5)
The English Rover [3 track] (1993) Musidisc 110332 (CD-5)
Camelot [3 track] (1993) Musidisc 110992 (CD-5)
Iron Man [3 track] (1994) Musidisc MU-770 (CD-5)
Band on a Rainbow [4 track] (1994) Castle TRAX-1001 (CD-5)
Flock (1994) Transatlantic TRA CD-101

Flock definately is a more plush, polished album. When I first played
'Up The Shirkers' the guitar almost blew me away, they definately
pushed the levels very high making it a very loud CD. For me the
standouts are always Janet Anderton's ballads like She's Not Gone,
Reason To Be,and Waste Of Space. Poignant stuff.
