I am a long time fan of the Span ( early 70's ) and was wondering if
there is a faq, or if someone could shed some light on as to what
they are doing now,..
and what albums are still available on CD

Steeleye Span on CD...

The main source of Steeleye Span albums on CD is Shanachie Records.
Steeleye Span's albums are listed below in chronological order, according
to the discography in _Portfolio_; the albums issued after Portfolio have
been added by me. The Shanachie catalog numbers are listed for the ones
they have issued; if no number is listed, Shanachie has not released it
on CD.

Hark! The Village Wait (Shanachie 79052)
Please To See The King (Shanachie 79075)
Ten Man Mop or Mr. Reservoir Butler Rides Again (Shanachie 79049)
Below The Salt (Shanachie 79039)
Parcel Of Rogues (Shanachie 79045)
Now We Are Six (Shanachie 79060)
Commoners Crown
All Around My Hat (Shanachie 79059)
Rocket Cottage
Storm Force Ten
Live At Last
Sails of Silver
Back In Line (Shanachie 79063)
Portfolio (Shanachie 79071/2)
Tempted And Tried (Shanachie 64020)
Tonight's the Night... Live (Shanachie 79080)

I believe they are are still theoretically in print, but actually finding
them in stores is hit-or-miss.

A few recordings of Steeleye Span from companies other than Shanachie
sometimes show up in U.S. record stores. Ones that I know about:

Commoners Crown: I found a copy of this in Tower Records, issued by
EMI Music Group Australasia (EMI 432063-2). Annoyingly, it is not complete;
the spoken finale of 'New York Girls' is missing.

Back In Line: an alternate version is available from a Canadian company,
Progressive Records (Progressive PRO 006 CD). It contains three more
songs than the Shanachie version of _Back In Line_; they include one new
song, 'Somewhere in London', and live recordings of 'Spotted Cow' and
'One Misty Moisty Morning'. It also includes lyrics of all the songs
in the CD booklet. The CD also bears a second number on the disc (but
not the packaging): Park Records PRKCD 8. Park Records is an English
company.

The Best of & The Rest of Steeleye Span: a compilation album, issued by
an English company (Action Replay CDAR 1012). Most of the contents are
taken from the first three albums. Three songs on this album, 'Western
Wynde', 'The Brisk Young Butcher', and 'Rave On', do not appear on any
other Steeleye Span album that I know of. The recording of 'The Brisk
Young Butcher' has what sounds like vinyl surface noise. And yes,
'Rave On' really is a cover of the pop tune of that title!

There are some other CDs available in the U.S. that Steeleye Span fans
(and especially fans of Maddy Prior) will enjoy. Note that the Park
Records and BGO Records titles are U.K. imports, though they are not
excessively expensive.

Maddy Prior and June Tabor recorded two albums as Silly Sisters:

Maddy Prior and June Tabor: Silly Sisters (Shanachie 79040)
Silly Sisters: No More To The Dance (Shanachie 79069)

Maddy Prior and Tim Hart recorded one album:

Maddy Prior and Tim Hart: Summer Solstice (Shanachie 79046)

Maddy Prior and Rick Kemp recorded one album:

Maddy Prior and Rick Kemp: Happy Families (Progressive Records PRO 007).
This also has the number Park Records PRKCD 4 on the CD.

Maddy Prior recorded three collections of Christmas carols with The
Carnival Band. I have found two of these in the U.S.:

Maddy Prior with The Carnival Band: A Tapestry of Christmas Carols
(Musical Heritage Society 512057X). This was originally issued in the U.K.
as Saydisc CD-SDL 366.

Maddy Prior and The Carnival Band: Sing Lustily and With Good Courage
(Saydisc CD-SDL 383; no U.S. availablily that I know of).

Maddy Prior and The Carnival Band: Carols & Capers (Park PRK CD9).

Two solo albums:

Maddy Prior: Woman In The Wings (BGO Records BGOCD215)
Maddy Prior: Year (Park Records PRK CD20)

Of the above, the most Steeleye-like music is found on the two Silly
Sisters albums and on _Summer Solstice_. The solo albums and _Happy
Families_ are mostly original songs by Maddy Prior and/or her husband
Rick Kemp, and are quite different from the music done by Steeleye Span.
(_Year_ does have new versions of some Steeleye favorites: 'Saucy Sailor',
'Boys of Bedlam', and 'Twa Corbies'.)

A number of CDs by Martin Carthy and by Peter Knight are also available
in the U.S. I don't have information on those; it's Maddy Prior that
I love.

'The Brisk Young Butcher' also appears on another much earlier album
by Maddy Prior and Tim Hart (see below).

Maddy and Tim also recorded two other albums together:

Maddy Prior and Tim Hart: Folk Songs of Old England Volume I
Maddy Prior and Tim Hart: Folk Songs of Old England Volume II

I don't think either of these albums are in print anymore. I had to
get my copies from a friend's albums. These are both absolutely
amazing projects. If you liked 'Summer Solstice', these two albums
will floor you.

Perhaps if we all talk about it enough, (and maybe even write letters
to Shanache) the list of Steeleye Span albums that are not out on CD
will get shorter :)

They have been reissued on CD on the UK label Mooncrest; I saw
copies last week.

I saw a report that HOOKED ON WINNING has been reissued.
This would mean that, with the exception of GOING FOR GLORY,
*every* solo or duo album by Maddy Prior has been
reissued on CD. I think they are all still in print, though
most will only be available from the best UK import sources.

(No sign of a reissue of LOVELY IN THE DANCES, however... :-) )

Yes, Mooncrest reissued them quite a while ago. Great albums!
They also reissued the first three Steeleye albums (with new (horrible)
covers and liner notes). The acappella version of "Rave On" was a 1971
single and appears as a bonus track on Mooncrest's version of "Please
To See The King".

>

Don't know about that (horrible album anyway), but BGO have reissued
"Changing Winds" as well. BGO have also reissued "Now We Are Six" and "All
Around My Hat", with lyrics and liner notes. Note that Shanachie's
version of "Now We Are Six" has the SINGLE version of Thomas The Rhymer
rather than the twice as long original album version. BGO's has the
long version AFAIK (the long lyrics in the booklet anyway).

I think "Summer Solstice" is on vinyl and tape only - I've never seen
it on CD. Also note that "Sails Of Silver" is (for some obscure reason)
still available from Chrysalis on vinyl and tape (no CD either) - the only
Steeleye album still in their catalogue!

Now that would be something :-). I never quite understood how such an
illustrous line-up could produce that lacklustre an album. Must be the
influence of Sidney "holier than thou" Carter.

Fanatic Steeleye fans might also want to look for Knight's and Johnson's
1977 duo concept album "The King of Elfland's Daughter" (with a host of
guest stars like Mary Hopkin, Alexis Korner, Christopher Lee...). It has
been issued by Edsel Records on CD. I wouldn't say it's an artistic
triumph, but it's certainly quite interesting, though I never figured out
why Knight doesn't play ANY fiddle on it. The songwriting is a bit like
"Longbone" on Sails Of Silver, so if you like that track, you might enjoy
Elfland.

I don't think _Storm Force Ten_ is still available. I'd love to hear
otherwise.

It sounds like this CD is the same as a UK one called _The Early Years_
(Connoisseur Collection VSOP CD 132). All the tracks are from Steeleye's
first 3 albums except:
Western Wynde (from _Summer Solstice_)
Rave On (now a bonus track on Mooncrest's _Please To See The King_)
The Brisk Young Butcher (from _Folk Songs Of Old England Vol.1_)
(I didn't notice and surface noise on my copy!)
Ploughboy & The Cockney (from _Summer Solstice_)
Horn Of The Hunter (from _Folk Songs Of Old England Vol.1_)

The old (& no longer available) LP _Individually & Collectively_ contains
one otherwise unavailable and excellent track by Carthy era Steeleye
called "Captain Coulston". (Shanachie should have included this as a
bonus track on _Ten Man Mop_ where it would have fitted perfectly!)

Ooh! Ooh! I know what I'm ordering from ADA next week! :-)
Last time we went around on the subject of NOW WE ARE SIX, we came
to the tentative conclusion that there had been *three* different versions
of this album:

UK LP, with long version of "Thomas"
1st US version, with short version of "Thomas", possibly resequenced
Current US version, with short version of "Thomas", resequenced from
first US version

I'll cross my fingers and risk $17 on the hope the BGO version
matches the UK LP.

On CD from Shanachie in the US; I haven't heard it and can't evaluate the
quality, but it's widely available here in the USA.

I hesitate to risk starting an argument about taste. The smiley face
on my comment about LOVELY IN THE DANCES really meant "Hah, I found a
used copy last week so a friend in Philly gets one!" I suppose I
shouldn't use smiley faces for really private jokes. I'm quite fond
of LOVELY IN THE DANCES; I think it's the most solid album Maddy Prior
recorded between Steeleye's 1988 breakup and her late 1980's
resurgence with The Carnival Band and NO MORE TO THE DANCE.
(Not technically a Prior solo album, but Prior sings five lead or
duo vocals and many of the other performers were associated with
Steeleye.)

THE KING OF ELFLAND'S DAUGHTER, on the other hand, I regard as one
of the most distinguished turkeys in my collection. The only good thing
about this album, for me, is that the departure of Johnson and Knight
left vacancies for Carthy and Kirkpatrick to fill, so that the 1970's
run of Steeleye Span could close with two very interesting albums.

Of course, your milage will vary.

Does BGO have access to all the Chrysalis-era material from Prior and
Steeleye Span? Perhaps we can hope for CDs of COMMONERS CROWN (with the
final bit of dialog restored); STORM FORCE TEN and LIVE AT LAST;
and maybe even a better-mastered version of PARCEL OF ROGUES, which
has some annoying glitches on the Shanachie issue. Oh, and
ROCKET COTTAGE to complete the set...

Both ''Rave On' and 'Western Wynde' are on the album 'Rave On' (mid 70's?).
This was a compilation of tunes by Span, Hart & Prior, Shirley Collins, Shelagh
McDonald, Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbick. I have a tape copy and would love
to get my hands on a CD of it if it's been reissued.....

As my earlier post noted, Summer Solstice is available on CD from
Shanachie. No idea whether there is a U.K. CD of it.

I didn't list any number for Storm Force Ten, meaning it hasn't been
issued at all on CD in the U.S. I was only claiming that the ones I had
listed numbers for were still in print.
