I'm a dog-lover compiling a list of songs about dogs. Any old favorites you
would recommend? Also, I heard that a compilation CD of country songs
about dogs was issued last year, but I haven't been able to find it. Sure
would 'preciate any help, by mail or otherwise.

Depends, of course, how "old" you want to get!

Here's a couple off the top of my head:

*"Bellman" -- traditional English folk song, performed by the
Watersons on their "For Pence and Spicy Ale" album, honoring the
memory of a beloved hunting dog. Chorus goes:
"So let's bid farewell to our Bellman
Whose voice you all used to know
And hounds of his kind
Are very hard to find
And he's gone where
the good doggies go"

*"Dido Bendigo" -- another classic English hunting ballad, performed
by the Watersons and assorted others. Lovely tune. Chorus:
"There was Dido, Bendigo
Gentry he was there-o
Traveller, who never looked behind him
There was Countess and Rover
Bonny Lass and Jover
These were the hounds that could find him"

*...which was the subject of a terrific parody by a group called The
Kipper Family called "Dido, Fido"--
"There was Dido, Fido
Bonzo and Rex
Rover and Lassie and Spot
There was Butch and there was Candy
There was Patch and there was Sandy
These were the dog wot I had got."

*"Martin Brannigan's Pup" -- I heard a Canadian singer named Barry
O'Neal (?) sing this at a festival a long time ago, about the
misadventures of a small but fiesty little pooch.
"Bow-wow, what a dog to be sure
In fighting he'd never give up
There's not a dog who as brave and as sure
As old Martin Brannigan's pup."

these are all from the alternate universe of zydeco:

watch that dog - john delafose and the eunice playboys, creole
zydeco farmers

shaggy dog 2 step - zydeco force, beau jocque and the zydeco hi-rollers

my little dog - john delafose

dog hill - boozoo chavis, terrence simien and the mallet playboys

keep your dog on a real short leash - rosie ledet and the zydeco
playboys

bon chien [good dog] 2 step - john delafose

also prevalent in zydeco is a zillion songs about mules...

wle.

"The Hound Dog Song" (traditional):

[CHORUS] Every time I go downtown
Somebody's kickin' my dog around
Makes no difference if he is a hound
They shouldn't be kickin' my dog around

Me and Lem Briggs and ol' Bill Brown
Took a load of corn to town
Old Jim dog, the ornery ol' cuss
He just naturally followed us

As we drove past Johnston's store
A passel o' yaps come out of the door
Jim, he scooted behind a box
With all them fellers a-throwin' rocks

They tied a can to old Jim's tail
And run him on past the county jail
That just naturally bothered us
Lem, he swore and Billy cussed

Me and Lem Briggs and ol' Bill Brown
Lost no time in gettin' down
We knocked the fellers on the ground
For kickin' my old Jim dog around

Jim seen his duty there and then
He lit into them gentlemen
He sure mussed up the courthouse square
Rags and bones and hide and hair

Obviously, there's Elvis's "Hound Dog," which was written by Jerry Leiber
and Mike Stoller. Also, Johnny Cash has a song called "Egg-Sucking Dog."
If you want to get really raunchy, check out Frank Zappa's "Dirty Love"
(on the album "Over-Nite Sensation"), which is about, um, a poodle. And
not to forget the rap song "Doggy Dogg World" by -- who else? -- Snoop
Doggy Dogg, on the album "Doggystyle" (parental advisory: explicit
lyrics).

Tom Paxton's "My Dog's Bigger Than Your Dog" veers away from the dog
pretty quickly, but it's certainly well known thanks to a certain dog food
ad.

George Gerdes wrote a pleasant song titled "Hey Packy" that Loudon
Wainwright recorded on his album "T-Shirt."

Ramblin' Jack Elliot also has covered the aforementioned "Old Shep," which
is still a pretty maudlin piece of work.

Um ... should I even mention Patti Page? "How Much Is That Doggie ... " is
about as vile as a pop song can get.

Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies did a song about a dog on their album
called "Tenterhooks". The name of the song is "Aloisius" {sp?}. Its a
song about respecting your dog. Great melody and lyrics.

It is on You Well Meaning Brought Me Here. Good luck finding a copy!

If you like that sentimental dog song, you'll like Old Bourbon on Alun Davies'
Daydo album, which is almost as hard to find as the Ralph McTell!

Then there's the title track from Caravan's Blind Dog at St Dunstans.

The Kipper Family did a wonderful send up on dogs - listing a whole load
of dog names as a very traditional English folk song. I've not been able
to find the CD in Canada so I can't give any more details but maybe
someone else out there can help and provide more information.

I've written a few Dog songs (maybe just dogs!)
DOG SUGAR (you know - kisses)
There's a little puppy at my feet
licking my toes, now ain't that sweet
his tongue is long, it's warm and wet
Do I like dog sugar, why, yes, you bet!

chorus:
Give me Dog Sugar - on my face
They just got to lick you all over the place
Dog Sugar, Waiting at the door
When I get dog sugar I always want more.

Kitty Cat's sugar ain't so good
Their tongue's all scratchy sand paper on wood
When they lick your toes you jump away
Anyhow I guess the kitty cat's are o.k.

They say there's Doggy Heaven
Now do you believe in that?
I hope that doggy heaven's where the
Other one is at
Cause I just can't imagine an eternity
Where there ain't no dog sugar a'waitin' on me!

How about "Don't Pet the Dog" recorded by a number of artists. Pinkard and
Bowden to a countrified version on an old LP, PG-13
Another one I like is "Captains Song" by Mustard's Retreat from their
album "Home By Morning" on red House.
Eric Bogle did a song about a fornicating chihauha called Little.... ??,
oh I forget. Again an old LP.

How about the tale of the "reason" why dogs always sniff each others'
assholes when they first meet? I can't remember the name, but it
starts out telling how the dogs had a party, and as they went in they
hung their assholes at the door.

I know that Friend of Fiddler's Green do it in 4 to 6 part harmony,
depending on how many are doing it.

Hello, how did Les Barker get in here with one of his poems... well dogs
certainly loom large in his legend, he owes his success to a bad
tempered, lovable bitch (the four-legged kind, I'm not being snide)
called Mrs Ackroyd. Before she passed on to that great kennel in the
sky, all Les's performances were under the supervision of said canine!

His subsequent works include such classics as "Dachsunds with Erections

He's also very hot on Lemmings... but I digress!

Haven't seen my favorite listed yet -- "Dog" by Tom Dundee.
Has been recorded by both Bryan Bowers and Tom. It's a talking
blues format.

DOG

The whole thing started 'cause it looked like fun
Other people had a dog, I'm gonna get me one I said
And have a little friend around the place
So I went to the pet store down the street
And lying in the middle of a canine heat
Was a sleepy little puppy with a quiet sort of a face

I gave the man fifteen dollars about
Said I'll stick him in my shirt and head on out
And I reached for the one that looked like a little fox
He said, You hold it right there, fill out these sheets
And have him in for shots in a couple of weeks
And its out policy that you take him out of here in this box.

He folded up the cardboard case in a minute
And took my dog and stuck him down it
And folded it in over the top
I can here him yet, how he scratched and cried
And he hollered some more when I got him outside
We were almost home before he decided to stop

The first few weeks were certainly strange
Between the barking and the thinking up a name
Old Blue he wasn't, and Spot didn't really apply
So I named him Hairy just because
That's how he is and how he was
And that's how the house gets more and more as days go by

For a while I was careful where I sat
The rug got funky and he chewed up my hat
And it still happens once in a while when he gets mad
But it's been pretty even after all
I taught him what I know about playing ball
And he help me get rid of a lot of stuff I used to have

Sometimes friends stop by for a couple of beers
And we all take turns rubbing his ears
And calling him, it's been that way since he was a pup
He sleeps on the bed, and when I turn over
Then he turns over, then I turn over
Then he turns over, then I turn over and we get up

As my life keeps moving through the different conditions
The big change comes with the slightest decision
And you're in for a surprise when you think you got it figured, I found
'Cause who ever thought I'd dote on a pet
But looking back now I almost forget
What it was like before my dog was around.

How about "Lost Dog" done by NYC duo "kick at heaven." Writer Jean will
be performing it with partner Steve on March 25 in the New Folk Concerts
at the Kerrville Folk Festival.........

I want a little tag hammered out of tin
Cut sharp, filed down, real round and thin
Wear it round my neck on a real strong chain
Gets me food & shelter keeps me out of pain
My name and number's hammered out just right
It's a good luck charm, a guiding light
I'm a Lost Dog
I'm looking for love, looking for a home
So scratch my belly, toss me a bone
I'm a Lost Dog

Got a mangy coat but I aim to please
Wouldn't ever tell a lie with eyes like these
Want a chance to prove I'm man's best friend
I'm far too sweet to need discipline
Cause no bark in the world is as good as a bite
Take me in let me spend the night
I'm a Lost Dog
I'm looking for love, looking for a home
So scratch my belly, toss me a bone
I'm a Lost Dog

Now do your good deed for the day
And take me home I'm tired of sleeping out here in the rain
I got all my shots, a cold wet nose and lotsa love
So darlin please be humane

Now you can bet your biscuits I won't leave you
For a man that's handsomer or one who's rich
I ain't got distemper,
I'm the one you'll be calling your sweet little .....

There's a lot I'll do for water and some bread
Roll over and beg but I won't play dead
Don't take too well to being left alone
I'll chew you right outta your hosue and your home
Only one thing'll ever be sacred to me
A dog tag saying you're my trustee
I'm a Lost Dog
I'm looking for love, looking for a home
So scratch my belly, toss me a bone
I'm a Lost Dog

Just my 2 cents worth.

Old Blue died and he died so hard
that he broke the ground in my own back yard

Come on Blue, you good dog you.

Dug his grave with a silver spade
and lowered him down with a golden chain

" " "

Old Blue treed, I went to see
The possum looked at him and then at me.

Come on Blue etc.

Poor ole Blue I think I know
That old Blue's gone where the
good dogs go.

Come and Blue, etc.

For years Carole and I have been singing Old Shep, the classic Red Foley
tear-jerker. Then we heard abound one that was even jerkier, "The Blind
Boy's Dog" written by Red River Dave McEnery of Amelia Earhart fame. We
found the words at the Library of Congress. Its about an old K-9 dog who
dies in WW-2.

David Wilcox sings "Block Dog" on his CD Big Horizon. That's a decent
one.

I have to agree with the post about Tom Dundee's song. I heard
Claudia Schmidt do it on Prairie Home once. Terrific! I've also
heard Utah Phillips perform "Quit Kicking My Dog Around". Also, Peter,
Paul & Mary's version of "Old Blue" is quite funny, setting the
song in various genres.

FOLK/FOLKISH

"Dog Trot" - Garrison Keillor, PHC, 1983

(This is a fabulous little loping poem. I don't know if it's
available. I know they've released a "Songs of the Cat" cd;
they may have one for dogs by now.)

"Damned Old Dog" - The Roches, *The Roches*
(Warner 3298-2, 1979)

"Black-Eyed Dog" - Nick Drake

BRITISH/CELTIC

"Sheep Crook and Black Dog" - Steeleye Span, *Below the Salt*

"Hounds and Horn Together" - Gary and Vera Aspey, *Seeing
Double*, (Topic 12TS407, 1979)

"Dog Fat" - Tony Downs (prior to 1983)

BLUEGRASS/OLD-TIME/COUNTRY

"Blind Dog" - Norman & Nancy Blake, *Blind Dog*
(Rounder 0254, 1988)

"Redbone Hound" - The Dillards
*Roots and Branches*
(Anthem ANS 5901, 1972)

"Let Me Be Your Salty Dog" - various

"Walking the Dog" - ?

"Cat's Got the Measles & the Dog's Got the Whopping Cough "

- New Lost City Ramblers,
*Vol. II: 1963-1973*
(Smithsonian SFCD40040, 1993)
(also performed by Kathy Fink)

POP/ROCK

"Yellow Snow" - Frank Zappa
"Me and My Arrow" - Harry Nillson (from "The Point")
"Shannon" - Henry Gross
"Honey" (?) - Bobby Goldsboro (?)
"Me and You and a Dog Name Boo" - ?

Can I also add afew Dog songs to your list?

Song Artist Title of recording
Hey Packy! by Louden Wainright III (Bicentenial)
Dog by Brian Bowers (By heart)
Low Down Diry Dog By Fiddle Fever

another one that will be very difficult to find. The band is canadian,
they broke up in the mid 80's and the album (no CD in sight) was not released
in the US. But if you find it, you will be lucky! and you got a real enjoyable
find!

Maple Leaf Dog by Stringband (Maple Leaf Dog)

Has anybody mentioned that ramblin' recitation by Tom Waits about the guy
who married a stewardess, who went soft on a chihuaha with some sort of
skin complaint, so life got pretty unbearable, so he got a couple of
six-packs, went along to the garage, filled up a couple of gas cans, and
torched the joint. Then he got back in his car, and headed east -- 'never
could stand that dawg'
