A while back Michael Smith's manager posted a note here (which it
seems I didn't save); perhaps he can answer this. It's always bugged
me that Michael Smith wasn't in the group photo inside the "Steve
Goodman: A Tribute" double album. I've always loved "The Dutchman", a
strange and haunting song, and I was curious to see what Smith looked
like..

The questions; Why was Smith missing from the photo, and is "The
Dutchman" about some real person? Has Smith released any recordings (I
didn't even know he was a performer before I got the SG tribute
album).

Michael is about 5'3" or so....balding...and a fairly good looking fellow with
rather piercing blue eyes. He has several albums out, all on Flying Fish:

Michael Smith [CD](a compilation of two prior LP's that is a wonderful
addition to anyone's library---it includes The Dutchman, Spoon River, Dead
Egyptian Blues, Sister Clarissa)

Michael, Margaret, Pat and Kate ( I think I have the order correct) album is a
collection of songs Michael wrote for his autobiographical play/musical. Each
song is poignant, touching and so literary as to force you to examine your own
values...

Time-a tremendous album that includes songs about aging, love, transitions and
friends and lovers lost....a must have for any collection...I play this album
constantly and get something new every single time.

But, then, I think the guy's a genious.

Saw Mike and Barbara Smith (ex-wife maybe?) with John Prine at the Brown
Shoe (now defunct) in Chicago circa 1970. They sang "You stomped upon my
heart". Been a fan ever since.

you mashed that sucker flat
you just sorta
busted my aorta

There is a picture of Smith on the back of his 1994 Flying Fish CD, "Time".

Well, I have no affiliation with the gentleman, but I can tell you there
are three CDs available, all excellent. Run out immediately and get
Michael Smith/Love Stories, a combination of two records rereleased onto
one CD. "Mihcael Margaret Pat and Kate" is basically a cast album of a
concert/theater piece he produced in Chicago last year--excellent. "Time"
is another collection of originals.

Yes. The Dutchman was a real person. I was listening to a Steve Goodman
tape and he made mention of this (radio show from 83 I think). Anyway,
I'll dig it up and listen again then post the guy's name.

Michael Smith is a phenomenal songwriter who has three albums on the
Flying Fish label, and recently wrote and starred in his one man show in
Chicago. He composed the music for the Steppenwolf Theater production of
"The Grapes of Wrath" and performed with them, too. If you ever get the
chance to hear him live, do so -- he's a charismatic performer.

Also, if you'd like to hear some other M. Smith songs but not done by him:
check out Anne Hills' CD "October Child" also on Flying Fish. All of the
songs are Michael Smith tunes. I think he also produced it but I'm not
sure of that. Great CD.

It's definitely worth trying to catch a performance by Smith--he's
terrific. He performs mostly around the Chicago area, but every so often
he goes to other places.

Michael Smith is a particular favorite in Dallas, Texas. We have him in
town at least once a year and it's always something special. He's a
keeper, not to be missed.

Go see him, Bill

"October Child" was produced by Peter Erskine (of Weather Report fame). This
CD had a "mainstream" sound -- too contemporary for a few folk DJs, but
remains a favorite with people who like the New Folk sound. Then Anne took a
totally different turn, and recorded "Never Grow Old," with Cindy Mangsen and
various guest artists -- all traditional material.

Neither CD was out of character for Anne ... she came to folk from the
traditional side, but also writes wonderful songs herself.

He's about 5'9", 140lbs, brn hair & blue eyes. Often performs around
Chicago and in Michigan.

He used to perform with his wife Barbara (Barrow) -- she had a strong lovely
voice and would sing lead while he sang harmony (his voice is alot like
Sonny Bono's). They put out at least 2 records before they split up, the
records were not on a national lable and I belive the're out of print.
Their album "Zen" was one of my favorites.

Just thought I would throw my 2 cents worth into this discussion. I saw
Michael Smith in Houston about six weeks ago. He opened for Trout Fishing
in America. I had never heard of him. He was absolutely delightful---
very entertaining. I bought two of his three CDs. If you get the chance,
go see him.

Are there three Michael Smith CD's? I only know of two, although one is
a bouble disc set. Wouls someone please list the titles and labels of
all three please. Or reply to me directly if you prefer. Michael Smith
has been one of my long time favorites and I though I had all his CD
music.

Thanks so much!!

On another note, I really enjoy the Michael Smith song on the Steve Goodman
anthology, I believe it's called "The Wonderful World of Sex". Does anyone
know where I can find the TAB and the real last verse?

Also Mike Smith wrote Roving Cowboy off of another Steve Goodman album
and Spoon River, Great story teller singer song writer. I believe he wrote
songs for a play also. He is a very talented guy.

Hi Micah.
I administer Mike Smith's catalog. Feel free to e mail me directly at
Zander d on AOL.
The most recent album is TIME on Flying Fish.
Before that there was LOVE STORIES/MICHAEL SMITH - two albums on one disk.
Also MICHAEL MARGARET PAT AND KATE from the play he wrote, all on Flying
Fish. Anne Hills make a recording of Smith tunes called OCTOBER CHILD--
also on Flying Fish. The previous albums are probably mostly out of
print, although I have tapes. Many other artists have covered his stuff,
if you're interested. There is also a songbook he illustrated himself.
Happy spring.

A few months ago, a kind soul on r.m.f. was providing
copies of KGSR's Vol 2 Broadcasts. Unfortunately, my
copy (along with 200+ other CDs) was removed from my
apartment.

I didn't save the person's address, if you're still
out there and have an extra copy, please e-mail me!!!

(I've already called Tower and Waterloo in Austin.)

Thanks,

kbb

Hi-
I administer Mike Smith's catalog. You can reach me through AOL at zander
d.
Mike and Barbara are STILL married - never split up - and living happily
in Chicago. He was commissioned to write music for a Steppenwolf
production of Grapes of Wrath a couple of years back. It won a Tony
award!. He has several albums out which are listed in other replies under
this Subject.
Or ask me!
Happy Spring.
