I was watching a French-Canadian music video channel (Musique Plus) a couple
of weeks ago when I saw an interview with a musical group called "The Rankin
Family". While most of the interview was in French (and the French Canadians
speak their dialect of French far too fast for me!) I did make out that the
group was touring and would be in the Windsor/Detriot area in the near future.
They showed a Rankin Family music video ("Fare Thee Well Love" from an album
of the same name, recorded on the Capital label) and the Rankin Family
performed a French song live.
I was quite impressed by the 3 women and 2 men who make up the group, so I
went down to the National Record Mart (NRM) here in Pittsburgh and tried to
order their one and only album, "Fare Thee Well Love". The next day I get a
postcard in the mail from NRM saying that the CD is no longer "in print".
This seems rather strange that a band would be promoting an album on TV that
is no longer "in print", so I'm guessing that NRM is mistaken. I tried to
inquire with them about this matter, but NRM appears to be run by 16-year
olds. So I've placed another order with another record store to locate the
CD.
But I was wondering if anyone here on the net has seen/heard of this group.
I would be interested to know who manages the group for bookings as I would
like to suggest this group as a possibility for a "Calliope: Pgh Folk Music
Society" concert.
So if you know of this group, please send e-mail or post to rec.music.folk!
Many thanks!

This is an amazing coincidence. I'd never heard of the Rankin family until
last week, when a friend of mine loaned me two of their CD's he had picked
up in Toronto. Both CD's ('The Rankin Family" and "Fare Thee Well Love")
are wonderful, and both apparently available in Canada. I believe they are
both on Capitol Records. I was told the group is from Newfoundland. The
songs are in Gaelic and English, a mixture of traditionals and originals.
I haven't tried to find these CD's yet in any stores, so I can't comment on
US availability, but I definitly recommend checking them out if you can
find them.
The Rankin Family are indeed a terrific group. However they are not from
Newfoundland. They are from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Coincidentally, as I read this letter, I was listening to their first album.
Hence, I have the tape case, and the address right here. It is:
The Rankin Family
P.O. Box 43
Mabou, Nova Scotia B0E 1X0 (for those who don't know, the last part is a
postal code=U.S. zip code)
I think it's an awesome album. Especially Mo Run Geal Dileas and Lament of the
Irish Immigrant. A friend who spends her summers in Antigonish, Nova Scotia
brought it back for me.
If anyone knows anything about whether or not they're going on tour, and when
and where, the info would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob Williams
Haven't heard anything about this.. but then I live out in Alberta.

I think Capital only did the video. My cassette (bought at a Rankin Family
concert two years ago) isn't under any label.

The album IS three years old, but it has only recently topped the pop charts.
As for how you can get yourself the CD, the Rankins do their own distribution,
you can write to their mother (yes, it's true!) at:
The Rankin Family
P.O. Box 43
Mabou, Nova Scotia, Canada
B0E 1X0
They've got two albums out: "The Rankin Family" and "Fare Thee Well Love",
and if you ask, they've also got a nice album by Howie MacDonald, the fiddler
of the group.

They've only recently signed on a manager whose name escapes me right now..
Write and find out!
