Sung to the tune of that ever popular Volga Boat Dirge:

Happy Birthday
Happy Birthday
Pain, sorrow and despair
People dying everywhere
Bodies hanging in the square
Happy Birthday

All thanks to Parker Mountain Scout Reservation and the sick sense of
humor belonging to boys summer camps.

Here's the one I know:

Happy birthday... ugh
Happy birthday... ugh
Misery, death and despair
People dying everywhere, but
Happy birthday... ugh
Happy birthday... ugh
Santa Claus has crashed his sleigh
All reindeer got away, but
Happy birthday... ugh
Happy birthday... ugh
Easter Bunny's lost his legs
Blood all over Easter Eggs, but
Happy birthday... ugh
Happy birthday... ugh

Yeah, well, I haven't sung it in a long time...

And I learned it from my High School Physics teacher, believe it
or not.

Here's some of my favorite verses, which haven't been posted yet.

Though the women wail and weep
Kill them all but spare the sheep

May the candles on your cake
Burn like cities at your wake

When the neighbors come for wine
Mix it up with turpentine.

We used to do this at gigs when someone in the audience
had a birthday. Was always big hit.

Happy Birthday (ugh)
Happy Birthday (ugh)
People dying everywhere,
Misery is in the air, but
Happy Birthday (ugh)

Happy Birthday (ugh)
Happy Birthday (ugh)
Now you've lived another year,
Now you know that death is near, but
Happy Birthday (ugh)

Happy Birthday (ugh)
Happy Birthday (ugh)
Now we've all got room to fear,
They say that Cancer's caused by beer, but
Happy Birthday (ugh)
Happy Birthday (ugh)

Or, that's how I heard it.

This is the sort of thing for which we need an interim response, like
the mailer-daemon's "Are you sure you want to do this?" But after all,
if he wasn't destined to suffer, he wouldn't have come here.

MARKLANDIC HAPPY BIRTHDAY, aka Barbarian Birthday Dirge

The "Barbarian Birthday Dirge" was actually popularized by the
Markland Militia, an East Coast group something like the SCA which
makes a Thing of having barbarian personae (mostly Viking/Saxon).
In reality they yield nothing in the way of authenticity to the SCA
-- if there is a difference it may be in their favor. (They concentrate
on a smaller segment of history and work much more with public demos,
for which authentic gear is a requirement. I note that in a demo at the
Smithsonian Institution last year, to promote the "Imperial Austria"
exhibit, it was the SCA cooperating with the Marklanders, not the other way
around.

Tune is "The Song of the Volga Boatmen"
The "ugh!" can be vocal or substituted by a banging of beermugs

Happy Birthday! (Ugh!) Happy Birthday! (Ugh!)
Gloom and doom and dark despair
People dying everywhere
Happy Birthday!

Grief and sorrow fill the air,
Children dying everywhere.
Happy Birthday ...

Plague and famine in the air,
People dying everywhere.
Happy Birthday ...

Doom, destruction, and despair,
People dying everywhere.
Happy Birthday ...

Just be glad the friends you've got
Haven't found out you-know-what!
Happy Birthday...

Fear and gloom and darkness but
No one found out You Know What.
Happy Birthday ...

May the cities in your wake
Burn like candles on your cake.
Happy Birthday ...

See the women wail and weep.
Kill them all but save the sheep.
Happy Birthday ...

Now your hairs are turning grey,
Soon they all will fall away.
Happy Birthday...

You're a period cook, 'tis true;
Ask the beetles in the stew.
Happy Birthday ...

Now your jail-bait days are done;
Let's go out and have some fun.
Happy Birthday ...

May your deeds with sword and axe
Equal those with sheep and yaks
Happy Birthday ...

You must marry very soon;
Baby's due the next full moon.
Happy Birthday ...

Your servants steal, your wife's untrue,
Your children plot to murder you.
Happy Birthday ...

They stole your sword, your gold, your house,
Took your sheep but not your spouse.
Happy Birthday ...

Were I sitting in your shoes,
I'd go out and sing the blues.
Happy Birthday ...

Though you're turning 29,
Age to you is like fine wine.
Happy Birthday ...

So you're 29 again;
Don't tell lies to your good friend.
Happy Birthday ...

Now you've lived another year,

Age to you is like stale beer.
Happy Birthday ...

So another year has past,
Don't look back, they're gaining fast,
Happy Birthday ...

Long ago your hair turned grey;
Now it's falling out, they say.
Happy Birthday ...

Now you've lived another year,

And your death is drawing near.
Happy Birthday ...

Like the wrinkles in old lace
Time is etched upon your face.
Happy Birthday...

Now you've reached the age you are,
Your demise cannot be far.
Happy Birthday ...

Black Death has just struck your town;
You yourself feel quite run-down.
Happy Birthday ...

It's your birthday; never fear:
You'll be dead this time next year.
Happy Birthday ...

We brought linen, white as cloud;
Now we'll sit and sew your shroud.
Happy Birthday ...

Birthdays come but once a year
Marking time as Death draws near,
Happy Birthday...

News that fills our hearts with fear:
They've proved cancer's caused by beer,
Happy Birthday...

Famine, fear, and fire and flood
Can't keep your face out of the mud
Happy Birthday...

Burn the Castle and storm the keep
Kill the Women but SAVE THE SHEEP!
Happy Birthday...

While you eat your birthday stew
We will loot the town for you.
Happy Birthday...

See the wrinkles on your face
Like the pattern of fine lace
Happy Birthday...

Indigestion's what you get
From the enemies you 'et
Happy Birthday...

I'm a leper, can't you see
Have a birthday kiss from me
Happy Birthday...

Burn, then rape by firelight
Add romance to your life tonight
Happy Birthday...

This one lesson you must learn,
FIRST you plunder, THEN you burn!
Happy Birthday...

When you've reached your age you know
That the mind is first to go
Happy Birthday...

Now you are the age you are
Your demise cannot be far
Happy Birthday...

So far death you have bypassed
Don't look back it's gaining fast
Happy Birthday...
