Is there anyone who knows the lyrics of some Tupelo's songs?
In particular I need "New Madrid", "Slate", "Shaking hands(Soldier's joy)" and
"Moonshiner".
Is there any bootleg of this fantastic (ex) group?
Can you tell me something about WILCO? And about JAY FARRAR?

Matteo,
Sorry, I can't help you with the lyrics. I've never attempted to sit down
and figure them all out & write them down. I know there are some bootlegs
floating around but I don't have any. I do have a short in-studio radio
appearance with some interview & performances, though. Wilco has been
playing up a storm all over the place. Their album should be out early next
year. They also have a track on the "Red Hot + Country" album. Jay Farrar also
has a new band but I know neither the name of it or when they'll put any
music out. Hopefully soon.

Hello Mattheo,

I don`t know Tupelo...sorry..but I still know the traditional lyrics from
"The Moonshiner", I hope it`s the same song:

THE MOONSHINER

1. I`ve been a moonshiner for many a year,
I`ve spent all my money for whiskey and beer,
I`ll go to some hollow and I`ll set up my still,
And I will make you a gallon for a ten shilling bill.

2. I`ll go to some hollow in this county,
Ten gallons of wash, I can go on a spree,
No woman to follow, the world is all mine,
And I love none so well as I love the moonshine

3. O moonshine, dear moonshine, o how I love thee
You killed my old father but dare you kill me,
O bless all moonshiners and bless all moonshine
Oh it`s breath smells as sweet at the dew on the vine.

Chorus:

I`m a rambler, I`m a gambler, I`m a long way from home,
And if you dont like me, well leave me alone.
I` ll eat if I`m hungry and I`ll drink if I`m dry,
And if moonshine don`t kill me, I`ll live till I die

I heard that Uncle Tupelo had broken up. However, you can hear them
doing "Shaking Hands (Soldier's Joy)" on Michelle Shocked's ARKANSAS
TRAVELER album. It's great!

There are at least 2 CDs of just Uncle Tupelo out there ...

Steve,
Uncle Tupelo did indeed break up earlier this year. They have four albums
available: No Depression; Still Feel Gone; March 16-20 1992; and Anodyne. All
are excellent, but Anodyne (their last) and No Depression (their first) are
my favorites. The song they do on Michelle Shocked's album is great. They
also appearon Conmemorativo: A Tribute To Gram Parsons; No Alternative; and
a few other compilations. Jeff Tweedy's new band is Wilco, and they have a
track on the recent "Red Hot + Country" album and should have an album out
sometime next year.

I saw Wilco last week. Loud, frenzied, and wonderful. I don't think
they'll qualify for "folk" by any stretch, but they're worth seeing.
More energy than I had when I was their age...

Regards to Uncle Tupelo Lyrics
The following was printed in the July/August edition of
Acoustic Guitar (it also contained an excellent article
on off-beat folk music):

Slate
Music and lyrics by Jeffrey Tweedy and Jay Farrar

1.Worn out joke keep the flies away
carried it this far
the west-side winds keep it steady
bury the hatchets we find
could carry that heavy load
I really thought it would matter
farcical hair appears
it's a blind side
clean the slate

Chorus
working in the halls of shame
lay it down in full view
lay it down

2. What the hell were we thinking
before the fire burned out
can't find you now
didn't know you then
loneliness drinks the bitters
'till the cold wind's warm again
to feel born again
mouth open wide, screams and hollers

Chorus:
working in the hall of shame
lay it down in full view, lay it down

3. Gambled once and won, never made a dollar
beauty fades to gray
pray the very best will guard her
and provide a way
there's a telltale sign
and it's chairs up, and time to go

Chorus:

working in the halls of shame
lay it down in full view, lay it down

James
