Happy birthday, Thomas Alva Edison, born February 11, 1847.
Edison invented, among many other things, the first commercially
successful phonograph. Was that device the death of of traditional folk
music or its greatest vehicle? I tend to take the latter position,
although for some folks the jury of history is forever deadlocked.
