Subject: Re Richard Thompson
X-Mailer: Elm [version 1.5]
Hi,
i've been a Richard Thompson fan for quite awhile - here is some background
and suggestions.
Richard Thompson started out in a group called Fairport Convention in the
late 60's. Other members of the group included Sandy Denny, Simon Nicol,
and Ashley Hutchings. Their albums included
Fairport Convention (also referred to as "1st")
What We Did On Our Holidays
Unhalfbricking
Liege and Lief
All of the above are highly recommended.
After one more album with Fairport ("Full House" not vey good IMHO) Richard
began a solo career with the album "Henry The Human Fly". After marrying
Linda Peters who appears with Sandy Denny on "Henry .." Richard and Linda
began recording together. Their albums are
I Want To see The Bright Lights Tonight
Hokey Pokey
Pour Down Like Silver
Richard Thompson (Guitar, Vocal)
First Light
Sunnyvista
Shoot Out The Lights
These are among my favorite records. The first "I Want To ..." and last
"Shoot Out.." are perhaps the best but each of the others are also
essential.
After a bitter divorce RT again began his solo career.
Strict Tempo
Hand Of Kindness
Small Town Romance
Across A Crowded Room
Daring Adventures
Amnesia
Rumor and Sigh
"Strict Tempo" came out before "Shoot Out The Lights" but it belongs in his
solo category. Among these recordings, "Hand Of Kindness" is my favorite.
"Small Town ..." is a live solo album (acoustic guitar only). From "Across
... to "Rumor and Sigh" RT has turned out some great music (but I do miss
Linda's vocals). The great thing about RT is that you can't really go wrong
with any of his recordings. RT comes up quite frequently in rec.music.folk.
