I recently heard a recording of "The Road to Mandalay" by a group with the
(approximate) name of "Friends of Fiddler's Green" --- but, alas, I was
unable to get any more information about them?

Does anyone know about this group and this recording? What is the name of
the CD and what label is it on? Does the group tour and is there a
schedule?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Fiddler's Green is a coffeehouse in Toronto which spawned not only a musical
group, "The Friends of Fiddler's Green," but a traditional English morris dance
team as well, "Green Fiddle Morris." I used to see them pretty frequently in
the mid and late-1970s. Among their membership were worthies like Ian Robb,
Grit Laskin and the outrageous Tam Kearney. From what I gathered, the group
would regularly shuffle its line-up, since many of them were performers in
their own right and would go off to do their own tours or recordings.

I don't know if there's yet another incarnation of FOFG out there, but if they
are half as good as the ones I remember, they'd be worth a listen.

Friends of Fiddlers Green closed the Sunday evening concert at last
year's Summerfolk Festival in Owen Sound, Ontario. I also saw them
at the same festival in 1984. Ian Robb and Grit Laskin are still
with the group. They released a self-produced LP back in the mid-80s
(which is one of my treasured possessions) and have a new CD which
was released last summer (sadly, I couldn't purchase it when I saw
it for fear of prematurely maxing out the credit card while on
vacation).

As for getting the recordings, you might try contacting Grit Laskin,
26 Noble St., No. 12, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M6K 2C9.

You can also read Ian Robb's comments in Sing Out!, and Grit is a super
guitar-maker. Alistar Brown performs also with a trio . . . Friends
live. (As for Grit's guitars according to Martin Smit, who plays both
with Len Wallace and Killiecrankie, there is a long waiting list for the
guitars . . . but they are worth the wait!)

Alan:

The "Friends of Fiddler's Green" album you are referring to is indeed titled
"The Road to Mandalay" and is on the FOFG label. It is available from Back
Porch Music on cassette and CD. Email me for further information.

FOFG have a new album out entitled "Road to Mandalay" and I believe it's self
produced. Andy's Front Hall has it, or will have, soon. They can be reached
at 1-800-759-1775.
