I remember a nice waltz a guy (Mark Ross) used to sing as part of his
folk music radio show (on KUFM) in Missoula MT (USA), circa 1982.

It may have been a Utah Phillips tune (a lot of them were) or a more
anonymous tune. The refrain, as I remember it:
'Cause he goes burling down, down the wide water
That's where my log driver learns to step lively
Burling down, down the wide water
Log drivin' man pleases girls completely.
The verse lyrics had to do with his light-footed dancing as a
result of his need to jump from log to log in the rivers.

Does anyone have the verses and/or title and/or author on this?

Thanks in advance, email of course.

The National Film Board of Canada made a short (cartoon) set to the
words of this song - unfortunately, I haven't seen it recently. You
could try NFB, Ottawa, Ontario if you don't get any other leads.

Author/Composer is Wade Hemsworth, who recorded it on Folkways many moons
ago. It's been recorded by the McGarrigle sisters. Words and music
available on The Digital Tradition.

Don't look for songs without it!

Log Drivers Waltz was written by Wade Hemsworth, one of the truly great
folk song writers of our time...a Canadian by the way.

The song in on Sany and Caroline Patons Album called New
Harmony...Folk-Legacy FSI 100. This was one of the last LPs issued by the
company (which the Patons own) so they may have copies of the LP left. It
is avilable on cassette by writting:

Folk-Legacy Records, Inc.
P.O. Box 1148
Sharon CT 06069
Phone: (203)364-5661

BTY - Bill Staines does a nice job on this song but has never recorded it.

Ahhh, every Canadian with a TV will know this one well-- a regular
feature on CBC for as long as I can remember. The # for the NFB's
American office is (212) 586-5131. Or you can try a Canadian office
too-- I have the Edmonton office number-- (403) 495-3010. I have seen
collections of NFB short films in Canada and lately in Nebraska
(gasp!) so you could check there for it. It's cool in a weird kind of
way!

You can ask any girl in the parish around
What pleases her most from her head to her toes
She'll say I'm not sure that it's business of yours
But I love to waltz with my logdriver...for he goes...
Burling down, down the white water
That's how the logdriver learned to step li-i-ghtly
Burling down, down the white water,
Logdriver's waltz pleases girls com-plete-ly!
Because of my parents, I had to give way,
And dance with the doctor, the merchant, the lawyer...
Their manners are fine bot their feet are like clay
None have the style of my logdriver...for he goes...

When the drive's nearly over, I like to go down
And watch all the men as they work on the river.
And when the drive's over, hey'llall come to town,And that's when I'll waltz
with my logdriver... for he goes...

Now I've had my chances with all kinds of men,
None have the syle of my man on the river
And when the drive's over and he asks me again
I know I shall marry my logdriver... Oh he goes....

Here are the words to Log Driver's Waltz, (c) Wade Hemsworth, thanks to the
excellent Digital Tradition, which also has the tune available.

THE LOG DRIVER'S WALTZ
(Wade Hemsworth)

If you should ask any girl from the parish around
What pleases her most from her head to her toes,
She'll say - I'm not sure that it's business of yours,
But I do like to waltz with a log driver.

Cho: For he goes birling down a-down the white water;
That's where the log driver learns to step lightly.
It's birling down, a-down white water;
A log driver's waltz pleases girls completely.

When the drive's nearly over, I like to go down

To see all the lads while they work on the river.
I know that come evening they'll be in the town
And we all want to waltz with a log driver.

To please both my parents I've had to give way
And dance with the doctors and merchants and lawyers.
Their manners are fine but their feet are of clay
For there's none with the style of a log driver.

I've had my chances with all sorts of men
But none is so fine as my lad on the river.
So when the drive's over, if he asks me again,
I think I will marry my log driver.
