I'm trying to find the lyrics (or just the artist and a
recording reference) for a song about a mill-town falling
apart when the mill shuts down; name may be "Weave & Spin"...
Any leads?

Yes, you're thinking of "Aragon Mill" by Si Kahn.

Lyrics are in "Rise Up Singing".

I think there is a version of this by Bok, Muir and Trickett--I have
it on a tape that I haven't listened to for a while. Hmmm, I'll have
to check it out!

Most probably "Aragon Mill", written by Si Kahn. I don't know on which of
Kahn's albums it appeared originally, but a version sung by the author
can be found on his album with Pete Seeger (and someone else whose name
I forgot) "Carry It On". The song is quite popular in Ireland and others
who have recorded it include Dolores Keane and Andy Irvine (who has in fact
recorded it several times - with Planxty, solo and as guest on a Peter
Ratzenbeck album).

The song is known in these parts as Belfast Mill, and has been recorded by
an island group "Guinness" - a very good version IMHO. A couple of years ago
my group " Touch of the Island" was performing the song at Marine Atlantic's
ferry terminal and some folks from Maine stopped and told us the song had
been written about a town in Maine - not Belfast, and not Aragon either. Any
other names?

Song is probably "Aragon Mill" by Si Khan. Some people sing it as
"Belfast Mill" I think. There's plenty of people song it, so it
shouldn't be to difficult to track down.

The song is called "Aragon Mill" and is done by Andy Irvine (I think)
on the album "Words and Music" by Planxty (Irish).
Hope this helps,

The Red Clay Ramblers also sing it.

Song: Aragon Mill
Composer: Si Kahn

Words and music are in the Digital Tradition. Don't look for songs
without it.

The song is "Aragon Mill." I believe it is by the Red Clay Ramblers. In
any event, it is on their album "Chuckin' the Frizz," originally issued
in the 1970s and probably in reissue now on CD. I believe it may also be
on some of the Ramblers' more recent albums.

It is "Aragon Mill "written by Si Kahn

At the east end of Town, At th foot of the hill
Stands a Chimney so tall that says "Aragon Mill"
But there's no smoke at all coming out of the stack
For The mill has shut down and it ain't coming back.

Chorus:
And the only sound I hear is the sound of the wind
As it blows through the town
Weave and spin
Weave And Spin.

Now I'm too old to work and I'm too young to die
And there's no place to go for my old man and I.
And the children have gone from the narrrow emptyu streets
Now the looms have shut down, it's so quiet I can't sleep
(*Chorus)

Now the mill has shut down, it'sd the only life I know
Tell me where will I go, Tell me where will I go.
(Chorus)

Some bands have done it As Belfast Mill- The Fureys for instance.

I know this as 'Aragon Mill' sung by Sara Grey & Ellie Ellis on "Making
the Air REsound" on Fellside FE039. In the sleeve notes they say that this
was written by a friend of theirs called Si Kahn from South Carolina. In spite of
the fact that Sara & Ellie are no longer singing together I think that people out there
should know of them. They had a huge following over here in the Midlands in particular
and can really bear the blame for many "dancers" who now can be counted as "singers"
as well.
This message is from Faith (once Powick) who is now married to...

I was the original poster of the "weave and spin" lyrics query,
and have learned that the song, titled "Aragon Mill" and written
by Si Kahn, is performed virtually everywhere with locally appro-
priate variations on the lyrics, and that the original (?) lyrics
are available in the Sing Out songbook. Thanks to everyone who
posted/emailed information. I think we're done now.

not quite. While I agree that the lyrics are posted in Sing Out
by Si Kahn, there is no date shown. Anyone know when Si Kahn
wrote Aragon Mill, or how old Si Kahn is?
The reason is ask is that one of my song books (the one I couldnt find
this morning) has the Belfast Mill in it, I think with comments about
it age.
