But, the greatest Musical Moment for me was when Joan Baez joined Harry
Belafonte on stage at the Oakland Coliseum Arena in the mid 60's at a show
called Stars for Martin Luther King, and they sang "All My Trials." Time froze
for those brief moments, and then the crowd burst in a standing ovation.
Followed by Dr. King standing up to speak about the struggle for Civil Rights.
That was a moment to remember, since I love both performers.
I'll bet that was special. But my fondest memory of Joan was when she played here
in Perth at the Cricket Ground (well, we didn't have the concert hall and
entertainment centre then!) and she decided to be her own support act! She was
horrified that the crowd might have to sit through something inappropriate (the
organisers never thought to contact the folk scene for a suitable support person
back then!) that she came down to the grassed area and danced to taped music, sang
an a capella song or two and met the people. I was busy handing out flyers to the
folk club I was involved with then, and she came over, asked me what I was doing,
took one (and tucked it down the front of her remarkably tight trousers where it
was clearly visible until she presumably went to the loo after the first half!) and
said with genuine regret, "Gee I'm sorry I'm flying out tomorrow morning otherwise
I'd come along tomorrow night!" She asked me if I sang - I said yes, - if I knew
her songs - I said of course, so she said she expected to hear harmonies from our
spot in the front - I said sure! After the first song she gave me a beaming smile
and a thumbs up - and I and my sister sang ourselves hoarse! It was a night I'll
never forget. Thanks Joan for many years of musical pleasure.
