I have fond memories of Ian Tyson's song "Someday Soon" which
some female vocalist recorded backin the late sixties or
early seventies. I've been pestering the local oldies station
to play it for me but they apparently can't find it.

Could someone tell me the artist (a female vocalist) who recorded
it and what year?

Memorable lyrics included:

"He's ridin' in tonight from California,
"he loves his damned old rodeo, as much as he loves me,
"someday soon, goin' with him someday soon."

Much obliged,

Judy Collins did one version, with wailing country-style guitars and
such, about then. If nobody posts the album title and I'll dig
it up. I think it's the one with the blue cover...

That would be Judy Collins. Sorry, but I can't remember the year it
came out. Hope this is enough to help!

Judy Collins did it on her album "Who Knows Where the Time Goes". I
believe it came out about 1968 (I'm looking at the album right now and
there isn't a date on it!).

As a bit of trivia, Steven Stills helps out on most of the songs on that
album, and plays electric bass on "Someday Soon".

Thanks for all the email replies and postings.

Trouble is, now that I know who recorded it and on what album,
I was also able to verify that my local oldies station doesn't
have it!
|-\

What kind of oldies station is that?

I ran across the sheet music to it in a songbook I bought at a
garage sale, and (since I read only chord patterns, not notes)
I needed to hear the song to see if I was singing it roughly
correct.

Judy Collins did a version, I don't know what year. It's on one of her
albums, tho, nothing obscure. And later rather than earlier i think.
Now I have to type a little more so this will get posted rather than
booted for being too short. There! That should do it. Good luck!!

As some (including my brother) have noted, a good version of this song
was recorded by Judy Collins. A perhaps better version was recorded
at about the same time by Julie Felix on her "Second Album" as cut
number one on side one. BTW - this album also has some other wonderful
performances of great music including the "Needle of Death" by Bert
Jansch. She's another reason to not junk the turntable (or toss the
reels)!

Sure, that's easy. It was Judy Collins. The album was "Who Knows Where
the Time Goes", an excellent album with some excellent backing musicians
(Steven Stills, James Burton, Buddy Emmons, Van Dyke Parks, James Gordon,
Chris Ethridge).

Suzy Bogguss will be on Nashville Now on Aug. 10th, and if the
snippets I've seen on TNN are to be considered previews, then she will
be singing "Someday Soon". I imagine she does an excellent rendition.

Oh, the year? 1968. Groovy.

Joan Baez also recorded "Someday Soon", but I don't know which album
it is on. I think she did a really good job of it, it's one of my
favorites by her.

I have "Diamonds and Rust" and it's not on there. Thanks (again) for
all the references to this song. I've ordered the Ian Tyson's
greatest hits CD which has it on it (as someone pointed out) in
the author's own rendition.

I'd go look it up, but my record collection is _still_ in boxes. Grrrr.
My extremely hazy recollection is that it's on "Colors of the Day", but
I confess it's been a while since I spent a quiet evening at home listening
to Judy Collins records.

Well, she recorded "Long Back Veil". Into which of those categories
