Top Ten Albums--1995 Folk Music
Geoffrey Huys

In some instances this was an easy task, in others a most difficult one. Choosing only my
top ten albums of the year meant leaving behind a ton of music that I really liked and
enjoyed throughtout the year. So, in order to ease my conscience a little, I also listed my
second ten as well as a handful of other albums I wish I'd paid more attention to during the
year.

Top 10 List--I did not put these in order (that is asking way too much)

Leslie Smith--These Things Wrapped, Waterbug
Pete and Maura Kennedy--River of Fallen Stars, Green Linnet
Susan Werner--Last of the Good Straight Girls, Private Music
David Massengill--The Return, Plump
Brooks Williams--Knife Edge, Green Linnet
Crow Johnson--Painting Stories 'Cross the Sky, Zassafras
Bruce Springsteen--The Ghost of Tom Joad, Columbia
Sons of the Never Wrong--Three Good Reasons, Waterbug
Steve Fisher--A Boy's Life in Texas, Waterbug
Betty Elders--Crayons, Flying Fish

Label of the Year--Waterbug (Hands Down....Andrew Calhoun wins by a landslide)

The Second 10 List--sometimes you just have to make a choice

Chris Smither--Up On the Lowdown, HighTone
Chuck Brodsky--A Fingerpainter's Mural, Waterbug
Jim Henry--Jacksonville, Signature Sounds
Diane Ziegler--Sting of the Honeybee, Rounder
Erin Corday--Secret About the World, Waterbug
Darryl Purpose--Right Side of Zero, Tangible Music
Kate MacLeod--Trying to Get It Right, Waterbug
Cormac McCarthy--Picture Gallery Blues, Green Linnet
Eileen McGann--Journeys, Dragonwing
Dudley Saunders--Restore, Fang Records

Some albums I wish I'd spent more time with....

Frank Christian--From My Hands
Brother Boys--Presley's Grocery
Cordelia's Dad--Comet
John McGann--Upslide
Leslie Tucker--In This Room

I decided that the listing was enough and that my editorial comments about each of the
individual selections might not be significant enough to warrant making this list just that
much longer.

I noticed your inclusion of the Eileen McGann cd on you list. I saw
her at this year's vancouver Folk Music Festival and was quite
impressed, but now back in the States I can't find any of her music
at record stores. If she is on her own label or if you have any
order-by-mail information could you please email me at don-fish on
mns? thanks for any help...

Eileen does have her own label, Dragonwing Music. You can order
directly from her or through Canadian River Music in Amarillo, TX or
through Old Fogey Distribution in Lansing, MI. e-mail me if you need
addresses.

The new Joan Baez CD, cassette, LP, "Ring Them Bells" has to be up there
on my list. It's Joan at her finest with great guests like Dar Williams,
Mary Chapin Carpenter, Janis Ian, and on and one!
