Last night my wife and my 18 year old son, Scott, joined a crowd to be
reminded saw why people even make music. How;d this happen? Well, at the
University of Texas' Union Ballroom, we saw Doc Watson. Period. The Doc
Watson.
Now, those who don't know Doc Watson are excused to immediately run to
Google.com and do a search, listen to soundclips from Amazon.com and
immediately buy a CD or two from the distributor of their choice. Let's
just say this -- at 81 years of age, Doc Watson brings to the guitar
years of living in the mountains, of picking through the folk revival,
of being the archetypal flatpick guitar player and singer and of the
keeper of not only a wealth of knowledge but also of remarkable music.
Music the way music is supposed to be played.
Add to that a gentleman I have quite a bit of respect for, David Holt.
He first came on my radar screen fifteen years ago as a storyteller, and
a good one at that. Add to that his mastery of the clawhammer banjo, a
pleasant voice, and his ability to bring out the best in Doc, whether in
stories or in song, and you've got a remarkable gift to American music.
